I have learned a lot about cheese…and change. My teacher, Mrs. Scanga, read us a book called “Who Moved My Cheese”. This book is about cheese…and change. Mrs. Scanga read the book because she wanted us to understand about the change we went through in moving from an early years school to a middle school this year. We talked about the different characters from the story – Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. They all had a different view on change. We had to do a project on the character we were most similar to in how they felt about change.
From this project, I learned that change can be good or bad. You can change by exploring other things or people around you. When one door closes, another one opens. I also learned that sometimes stuff gets boring so you should step out of your shell and not be afraid to find something new.
I liked talking about change because it’s easier to understand why you need to change. Change is hard for some and easy for others. If you think of what change will bring you, it will lead you to it. When you move beyond your fear, change can bring you bigger and better things. It can also make you feel free.
Enjoy things while they last but when they’re gone, go and find something new. The more important something is to you, the harder it is to let go, but if you do, you can find something you like even more.
My name is Taylor. I am a student at Greystone Centennial Middle School. I like to play basketball and hockey.

Taylor! I love the book that you have talked about as it is one of my favourites. I totally agree with you about change and how doing the same thing can be boring. For me, I like to have some things stay the same, but I love trying new things and new challenges. I think that this is so important for us as people.
What would you say is the biggest change you have had coming from an early years to middle years school?
Thanks for your post!

Great post, Taylor. Why do you think that some people have such a hard time with change? I like the challenge of a change. Sometimes it is really really hard, though. I haven’t read the book “Who Moved My Cheese” but now I think I will! Which of the characters did you say was most like you?
Thanks for your post!

Very insightful about change. I’m a teacher at MCHS in Stony Plain. In my English class with my 11′s, we are talking about identity and how change has affected who they are today and how expectations change over time. It’s good to know that people at every age are thinking about how change is important.

Thanks for the very insightful post, Taylor. As has been said…’the only constant is change.’ So I guess if we can learn to accept change and embrace it and grow from it; life is good!

Thank you for sharing your learning with all of us, Taylor. Your thoughts about enjoying things while they last is a great reminder to not worry about the future or wish you were in the past, but to take in all the good things going on right now. I am happy that the door to Greystone opened up for you this year – glad you are here with us, Taylor!

Hi Taylor! Thank you for being the first student to post a message at 184 Days of Learning. I discovered the book “Who Moved My Cheese” when I was an adult. I think that it is really cool that you are discovering some of these important life lessons – like handling change – at a younger age. Life is full of choices and you already have a great attitude. I hope that you continue to find ways to share your insights and to provide leadership to those around you.

Taylor, thanks for reminding me that sometimes I should go looking for change, if something is feeling boring! That is great advice no matter what age you are. I like that you find change exciting. That is a great attitude and it will take you far in life.
