Sharing the learning of Parkland School Division

Day 12: Shauna Wray, Assistant Principal (High Park School)

Today I showed my grade 8 Humanities class the YouTube that George sent to all of us titled, Caine’s Arcade. I have to admit when I first watched it myself I was amazed and touched by this little boy and his “arcade” and by the man who created the YouTube describing Caine and his project. As my grade 8 class watched you could have heard a pin drop. They were just as intrigued and impressed by this young man.

Afterward I asked, “So what do you think?!” Every single 13-14 year old began to share words like: patience, imagination, brilliant, heartwarming, love, grace, fun, smart, incredible, etc.. They realized that this little boy had demonstrated the power of demonstrating your learning and ability with a…………… “project”!

As we move forward with project based learning-this is a video that I hope many parents are able to watch to help them understand what we mean when we say that kids learn best by creating and in the end also demonstrate to others their learning in the same way!

This is not just a story about learning and creating but about heart and soul. Thank you, George, for sharing this with us!

P.S. I can’t wait to show “Caine’s Arcade” to my husband and kids!!

Shauna has attended school in Parkland School Division at Broxton Park from grade 4 to 12 and I have worked as an educator for Parkland School Division since 1985 for 27 years. This is my second year as the assistant principal at High Park School. My family and my career are what is most important to me!

I would have loved to see your students’ reactions, Shauna! I admit I shed a tear or two watching Caine’s arcade story as well. Students can demonstrate their learning in so many ways given the opportunity, and using co-created criteria so they know what exemplary looks like.
I wonder if your students will want to post some of their learning on YouTube this year?
