Grade 9s at École Meridian Heights School just completed a unit on poetry. Under the guidance of Larissa Boucher, a student teacher from King’s University, students completed the unit with a poetry slam. A Slam is an oral presentation of a poem with passion. Usually written in free verse with some rhyme, the poet “slams” the text with energy and enthusiasm, revealing meaning with their words, facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice. Meridian’s Grade 9s rose to the challenge and covered topics ranging from positive attitude to injustice; stereotyping to first love.
