Here’s what’s been happening in 1A at Graminia:
Language Arts: Our LA time for the next couple of weeks will be spent learning about rhyme and letter sounds. We are also introducing the ideas of a sentence and modeling how to sound out 3 letter words by blending sounds together. We will be focusing on the letters we have already learned in order to show students that these letter sounds work together to make a word. We will also add to their “letter toolboxes” by focusing on the letters “M” and “X” this week. To help reinforce these sounds at home, point out words in your child’s environment that have these letters and exaggerate their sounds when reading the word they are in (ie. “hey look- there’s an “M” in the McDonald’s sign. “MMMMMMMcDonald’s”). Pointing out these letters when you see them on road signs when driving or on grocery store magazines while waiting in line is a great way to help your child learn to read and kill down time all at the same time!
Math: We are continuing our look at different ways to show a number (digits, showing the number in a ten frame, reading and writing the number word, dice/dot pattern arrangements, where the number is on the number line, drawing pictures of the numbers). We will be focusing on numbers 5-9 this week. Playing dice or card games at home with your child is a great way to practice these skills at home.
Science: We continue our look at seasonal changes that occur with fall, expanding on the concepts of migration, hibernation, and how humans change their behavior in fall (ie. warmer jackets, blankets on beds, indoor sports/activities, raking leaves, put winter tires on cars,etc.).
Social: We continue our look at getting to know ourselves, the similarities and differences between students in the class and will look at the different groups that we belong to (ie. school, sports teams, art/music programs, families, etc.).
