# New math unit!

Dear Families,

Over the next few weeks, your child will be learning about estimating, measuring, and comparing lengths using centimetres and metres.

To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these:

 Ask your child to show you how a fingertip can be used to estimate 1 cm or a hand span can be used to estimate 10 cm. Use these known amounts to estimate lengths of objects with your child. Your child has learned to estimate 1 m using his or her steps. Have your child use a metre stick to measure the number of steps you take to travel 1 m. Then you and your child can use your “metre steps” to estimate the distance around your home. With your child, look through newspapers or magazines to find different measures. For each measure note the units used and whether the measure is an exact amount or an estimate.

# Valentine’s Day Party

Dear Parents,

Our grade 3 classroom will be involved in a small celebration of friendship on Tuesday, February 14.  Students are welcome to bring Valentines (either homemade or purchased) to exchange on that day.  To ensure that no one is accidentally missed, I have provided a list of names of children in the class.

We will also be making sundaes in the afternoon. I will supply the ice cream and would like each child to bring a ziploc bag with their favourite toppings. Please make sure their toppings are labeled with the child’s name. Due to allergies there will be no sharing of toppings. Each child should also bring an extra drink to enjoy with their sundae.

# We are starting a new math unit!

Dear Families,

Over the next couple weeks, your child will be learning about collecting, interpreting, and displaying data using lists, charts, line plots, and bar graphs. They will be surveying their classmates about real-life situations, and making decisions using their data.

To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these:

• Set up a tally chart showing how many times a chore was completed for one week. Your child can record a tally mark on the chart each time he or she finishes a chore. At the end of the week, discuss three things the chart tells.

• Your child can collect data that will be useful for a future event, such as a family outing. Family members might be asked to choose which of four places they would most want to visit. Your child can use the data to make a bar graph and then use the graph to make a decision.
• Challenge your child to look for graphs and other data displays in newspapers and magazines. Your child can bring in any data displays to share with the class.
• Have your child survey family members using a question such as “How many books do you read in a month?” In class, students will learn that number data can be displayed in a line plot.
