New Math Unit!

Dear Families,

Over the next few weeks, your child will be learning about fractions. Your child will focus on using fractions to name equal parts of a whole, modelling fractions, comparing, and writing about fractions. They will use fraction words such as halves, thirds, fourths, and sixths. They will use numbers such as ½, ⅓, and ⅔, and learn that the top number is called the numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator.

To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these:

  • Have your child look for pictures of objects in magazines that are divided into equal parts and then name each part using fractions.
  • Have your child identify objects in your home that can be named using fractions of a whole, such as an ice cube tray, a divided dish, a tackle box, or any other objects divided into equal parts. Coloured building blocks that are identical in size and joined together to make one shape can also be used.
  • Have your child make a display or poster illustrating a variety of ways to represent one fraction. Use coloured pencils, crayons, markers, construction paper, or any other material you may have at home to create the display.

You may want to visit the Nelson website at www.nelson.com/mathfocus for more suggestions to help your child learn mathematics and develop a positive attitude toward learning mathematics. As well, you can check the Nelson website for links to other websites that provide online tutorials, math problems, brainteasers, and challenges.
