Our class has been working on Genius Hour projects for the last few weeks and most students are in the beginning stages of putting together their presentations. For those of you not familiar with Genius Hour I’ve included some basic information. I strongly encourage you to talk with your child about their project. Talking with others will help them discover areas they might need to research more and give them more ideas on how they might present their information.
What is Genius Hour?
Genius Hour is time set aside in class for students to study a new idea or skill that they choose and are passionate about once a week for a set amount of time.
Why is Genius Hour important?
Students take ownership of their own learning. They learn about something they want to learn about. Genius Hour sparks curiosity, and students have an opportunity to become their own Genius. Genius Hour encourages lifelong learning, imagination, perseverance, self-awareness, adaptability, as well as other life-lessons.
How will Genius Hour work in my classroom?
Students will participate in Genius Hour once a week, each Wednesday, for approximately 1 hr. Students will choose a topic to study with teacher approval. Students will be given time in class to work on the project with the teacher serving as a facilitator. They will be provided research materials (ie., books, computer, iPads, etc.) to explore. One of the grade nine classes have partnered with us to guide our class in the beginning stages of research. As an end project, students must present their topic to an audience.
How does this fit with the curriculum?
The great thing about Genius Hour is, not only do students get to pick something they are passionate about to work on, the work they do on the project and the presentation of their work also naturally ties in with a selection of curriculum objectives and expectations!
The presentations are being made and our class is in need of the following:
- large pieces of cardboard for Genius Hour projects (appliance boxes would be great)
- Tri-Fold Display Boards (they can be used, we will recover them!)
Thank you for your support at home!
