Story Writing: Character Development

January30

We have started a new assignment, writing a short story. Students have had initial time for brainstorming (whether jot notes, mind map, paragraphs) and are now developing their characters. Today, I shared 2 examples, one good and one not so. I am trying to get the kids to write so that when someone else reads the work, that other person could draw/visualize the characters.

Here are the 4 novels students are currently reading for GCMS READS. This is our 2nd novel study. Kids are reading independently and in groups with Mr. Kolody. Reading schedule is on student’s Google Classroom. As well, each week students are required to complete mini objectives such as making connections, describing characters and Monitor/Clarify words they don’t know. These requirement are also on Google Classroom under GCMS READS#2 in their LA folder.

The instruments the students have built to measure weather. The kids have built anemometers, barometers, wind vanes, wind socks, and rain gauges. Using what we have recorded and looking at radar/satellite images we then makes forecasts for end of school day.  Check out our Twitter to see our forecasts.

Test your Math IQ

November22

Share if you Understand

8 + 2 = 16106

5 + 4 = 2091

9+6 = 54153

7+5 = 35122

20 + 3 = 602317

30 + 1 = 303129

18 + 4 = 722214

10 + 5 = 50155

Students tried this today for Number Talks. My key to the kids is,  “What is the connection of the numbers on the left side of the equation to the numbers on the right side of the equation?”
