In Loving Memory of a Friend
Rest in peace Meagan!
You will be in our hearts forever
Counting down the days until high school! I cannot wait for the upcoming year I think it is going to be a blast as well as a little nerve-racking being in a school that big. I am really excited for all my classes in the upcoming year and I can’t wait to see all of my friends.

ii. Carhartt is very durable, long lasting work clothing or for everyday wearing. This ad shows many different fields of work in trades
iii. construction, fabrication, mechanics, and shipwrights
iv. all genders, all ages, and any ethnicity
v. Red-action, power, and auto sales. Blue-calm, wise, and resolving their problems. Brown-lumber, earth tone products, strong, solid, mature, hardware stores, western stores, contractors, and carpenters. Black-style, simplicity, sophistication, and tire stores.
c. “Carhartt Hands” want to create the image of long lasting and durable work clothing in any job field. To me this ad is saying that if you buy Carhartt clothing your work day will be better if you are wearing Carhartt work wear. The image of life in this advertisement is that you will become a better worker in your job. If you are a mechanic you are going to become a better mechanic if you buy and wear Carhartt clothing.
d. This ad is likely to influence consumers to buy the product because they will see the advertisement is directed to people who are construction workers, welders, mechanics, and shipwrights. They might be convinced if we buy Carhartt clothing we are going to become better working individuals. As the ad shows that Carhartt clothing is durable everyday no matter what what kind of job you work in.
e. I think media shapes our society by action and acceptance of the ideas. Media has a large influence of what we do and see. Everywhere you look you are exposed to about 3,000 advertisements a day which is about 93,000 advertisements in just one month. I think media tries to shape who we are as we are exposed to so many adds a day that media wants to make us into these perfect little angels that can’t think for themselves. Media shows us what to do and how to act, but that is not how it should be. We should be able to think and act by ourselves not by what people tell us how to act and look. We need to show that media cannot influence us to do things that we don’t want to do. This is a world that we need to be an individual and not what media wants us to be.

Every time someone throws something into me I want to sarcastically cough the object back to the person. I get really annoyed when someone throws an object into the garbage bag that I hold that doesn’t belong in the garbage bag. It is really frustrating how many times I have to tell people not to throw recycling into my garbage bag because it belongs in the recycling bin. Every time someone throws me something that doesn’t belong I cough it out and throw it back to the person who threw it to me. The children in the class get annoyed with me when I cough things back at them, but I think they deserve to know what they did wrong even if they don’t know that it is wrong. The younger children at the school think it hilarious when I cough things up at the older kids as they throw the bad things into the garbage bag that I hold for garbage only not recycling. I personally think these children are very inconsiderate to what they are doing as they do know not to throw recycling into the garbage can. It could be a result of laziness as younger children take the time to put the right items in the right garbage and recycling bins. Maybe if I keep coughing things up at the older children they would learn to throw the right things into the right trash bins. I doubt they will learn anything because they are just being lazy about what they are throwing away in the trash bins. That is all I have to say to anyone that throws recycling into the garbage can as it belongs in the recycling bin.
If a market economy runs on an “Invisible Hand”, how are prices regulated?
If an individual wants to start their own business and they have some money to make an investment. They need a supplier to provide the products and services that are being created by producers. You need a business that has a high demand for a product and services. There are needs to be a profit of how much you will make off of the product the individual is providing. Consumers are a big part of your business as they will provide service to your business. You will have too think about your cost and how much money it will take to make this product. There needs to be a price for your product at what you will sell that product for. Quality is a huge part as you will need to be selling great quality products. Special Offers are another thing to consider as they will bring more consumers to your business to buy your products. You will need to establish a price fixing which is a determined price that the government or mutual consent for that price. Also you will need to make a choice of what you will provide and sell at your business. There will be times that you will need to ask for partnerships to continue working and running your business. You want to have monopolies as there probably isn’t anyone to compete against you in that certain business. The biggest fear for most businesses any where in the world is the fear of going bankrupt which means that you lost all your money you put into the business and the bank will take over for you and sell it to someone who can afford to pay the taxes that are charged towards the business. There is an invisible hand that has some control of the things that you do as well as how you run your business.

New Land
Dear Mom,
Hello. How is everything? Everything is good here. When I first got off the boat I was amazed when I saw where we were going to be living, there is so much room around us. We have made some money so life is a little easier now that we can buy some things. I have been working the land making food three times a day for everyone to eat and making medicines when they are needed and tending to any injuries anyone has. l’ve been really lucky the people I am living with are all friends from work back home. All the plants that you taught me about at home we don’t have here. There are very few plants that we have here that are native to us in Europe. Ethan is the hunter of the group so his work is pretty much mandatory, Nash is a carpenter he has been building all of our houses and storage huts, and Kaila is a blacksmith who has been making nails, spears, and arrowheads for Ethan and Nash. We have a lot of water because we get water runoff from the mountains in the spring so we never are really short of water; there are many different types of food to eat such as squirrels, plants, bears, elk, moose, and fish. We have someone working for us eleven months out of every year who helps Nash building things and in return we give him food, water, and shelter. We have many advantages from the wall we built for protection. I really enjoy living out here surrounded by trees and mountains. When there are storms the trees and mountains give us protection from the harsh Canadian winters. The summers are very enjoyable where we are as there are some really hot days and then there are nice cool days. Spring and fall are nice the temperature is always just right in late fall though it does start to get colder but it is not too bad. It is very nice here where there is a change of weather instead of rain for weeks, there is some times in the summer where the days are long and hot but they are nice because it cools off at night and early morning it is cool before it warms up. How are father and brother? I hope everything is well with them is father better? How is the horse, please take very good care of him and keep him in good shape for when I come home one day. One day I hope we will be able to reunite again as a family either here in Canada or back home in Europe. If you ever moved here you would love all the space there is. I hope all is well please give all my love to my brother, sister, and dad.
Sincerely, Cassidy

Dear Joey,
How are you? I am good. Are you staying in school and helping out the family as much as you can? The weather is very nice here. I think you would like too live here their is a lot of space to run and be a kid. It is a very nice country. Please don’t show mom this letter it would only devastate her. Queen Mary Colleen has asked everyone to provide soldiers, food, and weapons. I am providing medicine, and tending to injuries as well as I am trying to keep myself alive as I am a soldier. It is very hard to stay alive on the run, kill other people, and tend to those who are injured. I have had a lot of practice with a bow and arrow so I was lucky. Kaila was very generous to me and made me three very light-weight bows, a large quiver that I made, and she made all of my arrows. I always have a feeling that I am going to run out of arrows unless I don’t get my hands on more arrows. But I always am able to get more arrows as we go to camp at night to get more weapons, food, and whatever else that we may need. The bow is made out of very light-weight wood and a very sturdy string that I made from a deer hide so it will last longer than the strings that are made out of wool and string. I don’t just use the bow and arrows. I have a very genuine hand craved dagger and a very nice sword both that you would like. We eat pretty well; there is a very large supply of turnips, fruit, and other vegetables. Most of the food that we eat have very good amount of the daily need of protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins which is very good. We have routines during the night where we sleep in shifts so we can have a group watching in case they try to raid us during the night, and then halfway through the night we make a switch so the people who were on watch can get some sleep. I am lucky to be on early evening watch so I can have some sleep before having to start my day refreshed as refreshed as you can get with a war going on around you. If anything ever happens to me you are to show this letter to mom after you have heard from someone over here that I have died. If you do not here from anyone unless I send you a letter saying the war is over then I am doing fine. You may show this letter to dad and tell him that I hope he is proud and he knows that if I die that I died fighting. Please take care of mom and tell her that I love her. I will fight to stay alive you know me I don’t go down without putting up a fight. Hopefully this war will go by very quick and that we won’t lose too many people. Give my love to everyone there and say hi to my old friends and that I really miss them. Hugs to all!!

Dear Melissa,
Happy birthday! I am really sorry that I can’t be there at home for your seventeenth birthday. How are things at home? Things here are ok, did Joey tell you about the war? I hope you know that I am all right and I am still alive. There has been a lot of injured soldiers that I have been taking care of. I wish you were here to help as you are very good at making herbal medicine. There has not been a lot of food growing as everything has been destroyed by the war. I am sending a small branch of a pine and spruce tree I hope you would have liked something for your birthday sorry it isn’t more. I will be very glad when this war is over so I can go back to growing my crops and making medicine occasionally for when it is needed. You would like it here as there is something new to learn everyday. I have been learning and keeping records about the plants that are usable and the one’s that are dangerous. Each plant can be used for a different type of injury or medicine. In the records I have drawn pictures of what these plants look like and gave very detailed descriptions of what I have used them for. I have used those poisonous testing herbs mixes like we used to make back home, I have had to make alterations to them so they react properly to the toxins in the plants. Hope everything is well at home. Please keep the herbal medicine books up to date and record anything new that you learn. Make sure that you draw pictures of the plants and put detailed descriptions of the plants. Help out at home where ever that you can say hi to everyone and give them my love, and mom doesn’t know about the war make sure you don’t tell her.

Should the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act be changed to make it fair for all immigrants?
| C - Part good, part not |
What I’m Judging on: Immigration and Refugee Protection Act: (Page 167)Promote the successful integration of immigrants into Canadian society, recognizing that integration involves mutual obligations for new immigrants and Canadian society.Like in 1914 the “Komagata Maru” incident which was to challenge the government by saying that they didn’t have to sail all at once to get to Canada the Canadian Government made them stay on the boat for an extra 2months and when it was over they only let 24 out of 400 stay. We gave them a “C” because they were pushing some people away while letting some people come with excellent deals. Like the French and English speaking immigrants got amazing deals but the African and Chinese immigrants got deals were they had to pay to get into Canada. |
|
B -okay, needs some changes. |
What I’m Judging On: Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. (Page 177) Offer refugee to people facing persecution because of race, religion, political opinion or membership in a social group, and to people who face torture, or cruel and unusual treatment or punishment. An example for this is the “Boat People” they were refugees from South Vietnam who were fleeing the imposition of communism they feared imprisonment or death they were also fleeing the Vietnam War. The boat was refused everywhere else but all 600 refugees were accepted in Canada. More people in the next 3 years were also accepted from Vietnam. We gave them a “B” because they accepted them, but we didn’t give them an “A” because they didn’t let others in that were in danger of death or imprisonment in their home towns. |
|
B -This is okay but needs some changes. |
What I’m Judging on: Equality rights- Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. Our example is the Tamil refugees, 492 Tamil refugees arrived in BC and claimed refugee status. They were from Sri Lanka and seen as though human smuggling had been happening by the Tamil Tigers and most of the people were women they thought that they were human smugglers. They Canadians took them in but they were help in camps until they are processed they will be able to give there opinion. We gave them a “B” because they were taking precautions to protect Canadian’s and they were giving them a chance to there opinion. But by assuming everyone on a boat that comes just because o some of the people in their country did wrong is not fair. |
I thought the video was very interesting. Their is so many people in the world that don’t know anything Kony or about what he does. It is devastating to see all the children being forced to be soldiers. The video that we watched in class expires December 31st, 2012 so we have to make Kony famous and this is the year that we stop Kony and reunite all the the child soldiers with their families. “Family” is a very important thing to have because these children soldiers are within the age of eight to seventeen and this is a time where lot’s of children need their families the most. I want to help by telling everyone I know about Kony and how they can help by sharing what they know and telling others about it. We as Canadians need to take action and join in with this world movement and make “Kony” famous. By doing this our world will be a much safer place to live in. The creator of the video we watched was very inspiring it is unbelievable what one person can do and then get an entire nation to stand behind him and help, it is pretty amazing. It is our time to shine! Together we can make a difference it’s our time to bring home the kids!!
Theme The theme of Zach’s Lie is being able to find a safe place to live even if your entire life is based on a lie. It shouldn’t matter how you have to live your life you should be able to enjoy life. Enjoy your life while you can and live everyday to the fullest.

Personal Statements
VIII.Anger
Thesis: Safe Haven
No longer safe. What would you do if you and your family were no longer safe where you lived and had to pack your things and get up and leave?
That is exactly what Jack Osborne and his family had to do. One night three huge men who wore ski masks over their faces broke into the Osborne’s family mansion. These three men put the Osborne family household under arrest. Mrs. Osborne demanded to know why her and her family was being put under arrest. One of the men told her that they were under arrest because her husband Neil Osborne was caught for drug trafficking.
Quote 1: “The five of us stare at the passengers’ faces, wondering if any of them know….” Page 4
My statement: I chose the word “scared” because it shows how everyone is scared that maybe someone on the plane might know that the Osborne family is in the Witness Security Program. The picture that I used was a scared face showing the scared emotions.
Quote 2: “Men broke into our house last night. I’m racking my brain wondering if there is anything I could have done to stop them. Where was the caped crusader when I need him.” Page 10
My statement: “Frustration” is the word that I chose because it show that Jack is really frustrated that he didn’t do anything to stop the men that broke into their house. I put a picture of a frustrated face to show that Jack was frustrated with himself.
Quote 3: “I had a very bad feeling. It’s hard to believe, but I think the worst is still to come.” Page 37
My statement: I chose a picture of a person lying in bed sick because it shows that Jack feels that he is “sick to the stomach” because the worst is still to come.
Quote 4: “We are being kept like prisoners in our new hotel. They have taken the phones away. To remove the temptation.” Page 45
My statement: I chose the word “boredom” to show that Jack and his family were really bored being locked up in a hotel room and not be able to go anywhere or do anything. I don’t have a picture to show boredom because there is a picture in the world to show boredom.
Quote 5: “When the housekeeper comes to clean, we’re stuffed into the adjoining room until she’s finished. We never go outside.” Page 45
My statement: I chose the word “prisoner” because it is saying that the Osborne’s are feeling like they are being kept like prisoners in there hotel room. I chose a cartoon picture of someone in a jail cell to show that the Osborne’s are being kept like prisoners.
Quote 6: “My room is more like an enclosed hallway than a bedroom.” Page 61
My statement: “Sadness” shows that Jack is sad because he had to leave everything behind and restart his life as Zach Granger. I chose a picture of a face crying to show how Jack feels about his new life.
Quote 7: “School starts tomorrow. I’m nervous about school. I haven’t started in a new school since I was in kindergarten.” Page 77
My statement: I chose the word “nervous” because Jack is nervous about starting at a new school and having to start a new life as a different person. I don’t have a picture for nervous.
Quote 8: “I can’t believe that I abandoned Commander IF! But what else could I have done? Thanks for picking up my imaginary friend, Caitlyn. Are you impressed? Page 96
My statement: “Anger” shows that Zach is mad at Caitlyn for finding Commander IF and the picture that I chose was a red cartoon face with steam coming out of his ears to show how angry Zach is.
Quote 9: “The job is hard, but the pay is good, the food is amazing, and Caitlyn is about 150 feet from where I’m working.” Page 119
My statement: “Laughter” is showing that Zach is actually having a good time living a new life. I chose a picture of a cartoon face that is laughing to show that Zach is having a good time.
Quote 10: “I woke up before dawn and stayed in my sleeping bag until the sun took them away.” Page 127
My statement: “Peaceful” I think the word peaceful fits this quote perfectly because it shows that Zach is feeling peaceful by laying out in the country looking up at the stars at dawn. The picture that I chose was a colorful peace sign to show that Zach was feeling peaceful.
Safe Haven. You need to be able to feel safe where ever you are, even if you are living a lie. No matter what your life you should always have a safe place to live no matter what.
