Archive for This Week in Parkland

Oct 26

I am seeing some amazing work, ideas, and recognition for our schools in Parkland School Division weekly.  What I would like to do is share some of the links that I am seeing that are Parkland specific and share them with you on a weekly basis.  Here are a few things that I saw:

1.  CTV Edmonton – Students answer call to empower women half a world away – CTV News - Memorial Composite High School had a powerful night with Amanda Lindhout after many months of work supporting the Global Enrichment Foundation.  This piece and the accompanying video highlight some of the amazing things that are happening in Parkland School Division revolving around global awareness and citizenship.  It was overwhelming to watch the emotions in this video from Parkland staff and students who showed how powerful a community can be when it comes together to support others in need.  Amazing job by Memorial Composite High School!

2. iPad in every TEACHER’S hand | Opening Doors and Turning On Lights - Jesse McLean wrote this great post about using an iPad in the classroom and how it can help him be more efficient in the classroom.  For students to be able to use these devices in the classroom, teachers should explore and try some of the functions themselves.  Jesse gives some great ideas!

3.  Here we Go! - Shaye Patras highlighted some of the work that is happening around Parkland School Division’s reporting system to improve learning for students.  This is definitely worth the read as it highlights the importance of why Parkland is moving to a more progressive way of reporting, while being open and transparent in the process.  Shaye ends the post with the following:

There’s an old story that I remember reading in Times Magazine some time ago.

Rip Van Winkle awakens in the 21st century after a hundred year snooze and is of course utterly bewildered by what he sees’. ‘Every place Rip goes just baffles him. But when finally he walks into a schoolroom, the old man knows exactly where he is. “This is a school”, he declares. “We used to have these back in 1906”’

Every profession, field, industry etc. have evolved over the past 1oo years, has the reporting in Education evolved?

Every week we are seeing some amazing work from our entire division and it is great to be able to share it with each other and the world.
