Spruce Grove Composite High School “Walk a Mile” Staff Challenge

From the desk of Spruce Grove Composite High School’s health champion Dave Oldham:

Good morning,

As a final staff wellness activity, your Health Champion team (Rhonda, Sue, and I) are putting out the “Walk a mile or 3 in your own shoes” challenge.

We have 80 pedometers down our phys.ed area. You are welcome to come and sign one out anytime this week to test them out, and the challenge will go from Monday June 9th-Wednesday  June 18th.

The challenge comes in 2 parts:

  1.  As a staff we will attempt to take the equivalent steps required to walk across Canada.  My rigorous calculations tell me that there are 4,473.3Km from Victoria to Halifax.  Not all strides are equal, but the average step is just under a meter so there are on average 1,100 steps to a KM.  This means our staff goal is 4,920,630 steps to get from Victoria to Halifax!  If 50 people participate for the 10 day challenge we would have a shot at it, based on the average of 10,000 steps/day.
  2. The staff member who HONESTLY records the most steps in our Google docs spreadsheet will win a $50 gift certificate!

 Next steps:

Sign out a pedometer from myself, Sue, or Rhonda this week or at the latest Monday morning.

We will create a Google docs spreadsheet by Tuesday morning and you can then enter your daily steps from Monday June 9th to Wednesday June 18th

Questions…fire away!

 Thanks,

Dave Oldham
