How do ads influence consumers and citizens?

1. M&M I’m sexy and I know it

) The product is M&M’S

ii) I like this ad because it is funny.

ii) I think that the targeted audience is ages 12-30

iv) They are adults, there is a mixture of genders and mostly white people.

v) They are associating royalty from the purple (richness), Brown for a comfortable color, Red for attraction.

c. They are saying that you should go to clubs because it will make you important. They are trying to make you believe that they are the best company and you should buy from them. They want to make you believe that you should just assume and not find out before you do something. The are telling you that getting naked is OK I public.

d. I think this commercial is more funny that anything and I wouldn’t go buy M&M’S after I saw it. I think people that like chocolate would be more likely to go and buy it though. I think they did a good job on the video inn the funny aspect and I think that would be the reason people would buy them after they saw this commercial.  They are trying to say that you would feel comfortable and wealthy if you at these.

e. I think that Media controls our society these days. I don’t believe that it is a good thing, but we listen to everything Media says. When you see an appealing bulletin board or commercial you will most likely go and buy that product. I think that we should stick up more for our society so it isn’t so covered in Media. If the Media tells us to do something we will its like we have no control over our selves.

Garbage Can Vivid Description

The garbage can was so inconsiderate that every time I throw something in it, it would spit it back out. As I tried to lift the lid and throw the garbage out it sucked in my hand and wouldn’t let go. As I pulled out my hand he puked the garbage all over my new shoes. After that I was so mad at the  garbage can so I took it outside and throw it in the gigantic garbage can and then that garbage can spit out the other garbage can. I couldn’t believe my eyes so I stomp back inside and heard the cackles behind me.

Invisible Hand

An invisible hand is how a market economy works without anyone planning it. When a supplier decides to open a business like a gas station and when his cost is too high the consumer won’t want to purchase it. But if there is a monopoly and the demand for gas is high then the supplier will make a profit even if the price is too high. If a consumer believes that the price is o high they can start a competition and make their own gas station or business. Once both of the businesses are up and running then it is your choice to choose what gas station you will buy from, things that will help you make this decision are the quality of the building and the service. Sometimes between two or more people they will create a partnership, they might also do this between the two businesses. Sometimes suppliers will provide the consumers with incentives like a free donut for 50 liters of gas. Special offers sometimes include a discount on food if you spend a certain amount on gas. Sometimes if a supplier is about to go bankrupt they with make a price fixing will another supplier.

In the situation of a gas station we had a monopoly but his price was too high so Tasha decided to build another gas station next to his and then lower her price as he saw her building going up he lowered his price. After awhile they were competing back and forth between businesses to make a better profit then the other. A few weeks later they started adding in food, seating, games, and carwashes. As they were competing the prices of taxes and gas went up so they had to raise their prices but on supplier forgot to and he ended up losing money, while the other raised up her prices to make it so she didn’t lose any money. At the end of it all they were giving out free food and beverages and Michael won by making his gas 1 cent less than Tasha’s.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Hello I just wanted to send you a letter saying how my life in Canada is. It’s so good but different it was very hard to get use to the different climate and time change. The government gave Beth and I a piece of that we share with two other guys. I have been having a great time being free; on our land we luckily have two great water sources and nice land. It’s great that I brought along my seeds and food utensils as we need the food. We were lucky to end up with an apple and orange tree so we have good food. Also one of the people living with us is a fisher and seen as though we live by two of the major water sources we get fresh fish whenever we want. We have trade some of our clothes and food for a cow which is fabulous because we have fresh milk every single day. Our next move is to get a chicken so we can have eggs for breakfast. We have started to plant rice paddies and also we are planting oats. We have started to trade for metals. Also up the hill from us are some people that have furs and fabrics so we can make clothes and blankets. Right now we are living in a cave and are storing our food in a Tipi. Luckily we only have five more years to go before we can own the land permanently, I am hoping that we can own the land as it would be very helpful. We have worked very hard; I wish you guys were here. I miss you guys how has life been for you lately? Is dad still working as a blacksmith? Are you mom still cooking for the Peterson’s? I hope you guys are making a good living where you are. I wish you could move out here but you wouldn’t be close to us anyways because they aren’t putting any more people on the land near us. Do you know if there is going to be anymore wars where you are? I like Canada for that reason; we are where there is not many wars at all. How is Grandmother doing is she still sick, I hope that you can find a treatment for this disease they call cancer.

Are cousins still thinking of moving to Canada is so you should try and see if you can come to. I’m sure you guys will qualify and the Queen here is very nice, so are the people. Hopefully one day you guys can come live here with us. I think I will live on this land all my life we won’t get another chance like the one I have now so I am making it an extraordinary adventure. We don’t have the best house yet but we sacrificed it for food and fire. We don’t need a huge shelter as that we don’t even spend half our day in it. Two of us go hunting at once so it good that we have our Tipi. It bring us great use in the winter for storing our food and it’s great for traveling.   Well now I must say farewell as the soldiers must go with our letters. I love all of you very much and hope to see yah soon.

Jessica.

November, 1509

Dear Mom and Dad,

The queen came again today we get to stay on our land another year because we gave up two of our loyal workers and some foods. I’m sad to see them go they have become friends of mine. I am also very scared about the war going on, we live pretty close to the mountains where they will be coming from so I hope we don’t get in the middle of everything. I’m happy to supply the queen and her warriors with all the supplies they need but I don’t want to be a warrior. I am very scared for our lives and wish this wasn’t going on. I thought coming to Canada would help us get away from all the wars but it has just brought us a new one. In some ways I don’t think it is fair that the queen says we must give her what she wants or we won’t be allowed to stay on the land. I just want to stay here and I don’t understand why she can’t find soldiers from other camps or other places in Canada. I would like to ask her these things but I don’t want to risk losing our land for everyone else. No one can ruin my new life because I am determined to earn my right to this land and start a new life in Canada. I hope you guys are doing well, how is the new shop dad was trying to open did it work out? Is grandma still sick with cancer? Lately I feel like my world is spinning the queen just seems to be asking for more and more for this war I wish it would all end it feels like the home I use to know before I moved here. I wish that this would all end I must learn to sew before sister leaves or else we won’t have any clothes or any blankets. I wish we weren’t losing two of our people because it would be much easier with them, I also feel like we are losing the resources we worked so hard to grow. I just don’t  think it’s fair and I wish that the queen wouldn’t be so rude. There is no one to talk to here I wish you guys were hear I miss you so dang much. I must go now its time to start making dinner.

Dear Mom and Dad:

I am so happy right now the rest of the people on our land and myself got to stay. The war finally ended and the queen liked our donations so we got to keep the land. The community around us is still growing and people are learning how to share their resources and we have begun to trade. We get lots of fabric and meat when we sell our milk and fish. I wish you guys were here I am missing you guys so  much. I heard that grandma finally passed away I got a letter from cousins. Why didn’t you tell me I was so upset when I heard the news I was so close to her and I know that I couldn’t say goodbye or anything but you could have told me. I wish I had some family here, its sometimes lonely in the day time when everyone is out hunting I hate being the cook. I think I’m going to learn to hunt then at least I can join then right now I’m just a nuisance. We finally got the chicken that we wanted it is nice having a good meal in the mornings, her eggs are also good to sell at the market.

There isn’t much more to say so bye for now,

Jessica

Kony 2012.

I think that the Kony video was so important to our world and we need to take action so we can help the children soldiers! I believe that if we help it is something that will change the world. Putting Joseph Kony in jail will help our world. Its time to take action so the first thing I am gonna do is send in money to get the African soldiers the money they need to track Kony in the depths of the jungle. We must make Joseph Kony the most famous person in the world but not in a good way we need to make him known through out the world.  So please take the first step and watch the video. After your done this go to the  information page to learn more about stopping Joseph Kony, if you can please make a donation so we can find this man. We need to get the invisible children out of the shadows we need to help the children being abused we need to make difference so lets start here!

Immigration Report Card. By Jessica and Cassidy

Should the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act be changed to make it fair for all immigrants?

C
- Part good, part not
What I’m Judging on:
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act: (Page 167)Promote the successful integration of immigrants into Canadian society, recognizing that integration involves mutual obligations for new immigrants and Canadian society.Like in 1914 the “Komagata Maru” incident which was to challenge the government by saying that they didn’t have to sail all at once to get to Canada the Canadian Government made them stay on the boat for an extra 2months and when it was over they only let 24 out of 400 stay.
We gave them a “C” because they were pushing some people away while letting some people come with excellent deals. Like the French and English speaking immigrants got amazing deals but the African and Chinese immigrants got deals were they had to pay to get into Canada.

B

-okay, needs some changes.

What I’m Judging On:            Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. (Page 177)

Offer refugee to people facing persecution because of race, religion, political opinion or membership in a social group, and to people who face torture, or cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.

An example for this is the “Boat People” they were refugees from South Vietnam who were fleeing the imposition of communism they feared imprisonment or death they were also fleeing the Vietnam War. The boat was refused everywhere else but all 600 refugees were accepted in Canada. More people in the next 3 years were also accepted from Vietnam.

We gave them a “B” because they accepted them, but we didn’t give them an “A” because they didn’t let others in that were in danger of death or imprisonment in their home towns.

B

-This is okay but needs some changes.

What I’m Judging on:

Equality rights-

Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

Our example is the Tamil refugees, 492 Tamil refugees arrived in BC and claimed refugee status. They were from Sri Lanka and seen as though human smuggling had been happening by the Tamil Tigers and most of the people were women they thought that they were human smugglers. They Canadians took them in but they were help in camps until they are processed they will be able to give there opinion.

We gave them a “B” because they were taking precautions to protect Canadian’s and they were giving them a chance to there opinion. But by assuming everyone on a boat that comes just because o some of the people in their country did wrong is not fair.

BLAST Response

no spitting, no smoking

Building Leadership Among Schools Today or BLAST is a program that goes on around Canada to teach children about the use of tobacco and how its harms you. I thought the best presenter was definitely Jack I felt that he had the most spirit and he could keep a room of teenagers awake. I also thought that his presentation was the best because he taught us that candy and little containers of ground beef jerky are exactly like tobacco products. Candy sticks that you get at Halloween are just like cigarettes because they look like and its a way to try and get kids addicted at a young age. Ground beef jerky is in the same container as chewing tobacco. I thought that it was the most ridiculous thing how can they get away with putting it on the market i asked myself after the presentation. Also I liked that one girl taught us about our appearances and that everyone is different and that you don’t have to smoke to look cool. After everyone talked to us the then gave us cool machines  called clickers and we did a quiz I think that some of the numbers were amazing and that some of the answers surprised me. I think the blast group did and awesome job and that the really did raise awareness to the JR. High in our school.

Canada and Quebec’s Cultures

In the movie “The Grande Seduction” we learned about French culture. Culture is something that a group of people carry with them like their religion, lifestyle, language and much more. I will tell you the differences of the French and English cultures and tell you what is the same.

In Canada we have a variety of different cultures our biggest culture is English. The main language in Canada is English but we have a lot of minority languages to. Some jobs and industries that we have are oil, gas and agriculture, the main way we get around is by car. If you get around by car then you need to have the industries because cars run on gas. We have new technology like new apple computers or iphone’s and we even have ipod touch’s. The sport a lot of Canadian’s watch and some play is hockey, Canada has a hockey team for each province in it. Alberta’s is the Edmonton Oilers. The main language in Canada is English but we have a lot of minority languages to. Some leisure activities they have are watching hockey and social drinking. All of these are the cultures of Canadian’s we might not have each culture in us but we have at least one of them. In Stony Plain and Spruce Grove Alberta we have a lot of different industries. One industry we have is our Tri Leisure Center, at the Tri Leisure Center we have multiple things you can do there, like swimming, play8ing hockey, playing soccer and working out. Plus the Tri Leisure center is filled with many more little food stores and places to go sit. We also have a Arena where you can go to play hockey or just skate on it. In Stony Plain and Spruce grove we have a lot of places you can work there is supermarkets, hardware stores, and little gift shops along the way. We have a lot of different places that we can go to shop our give our selves little treats. One popular thing that men and women like in Canada is get massages done so they have a lot of those places to. Plus we have a lot of different malls that you can shop at. In Stony Plain and Spruce Grove you can get anything you need.

In Quebec they speak mainly French but they have a minority language of English. Their main religion is Catholicism. The have a high unemployment rate and the only way that they get money was by picking up their welfare checks everyday. They are three hours away from the nearest city so the only way they can get there is by a small ferry. In their town they don’t have any cars or vehicles and it is a very small town so they have to get around by walking. Their technology is not very goo because they have dated technology, no cell phone/phone services, and very old computers. The main sport that they liked there was hockey but to get the doctor, the had to pretend to like cricket. What they do for leisure activities they have are watching hockey and social drinking also they like to go fishing for fun seen as though they couldn’t fish for food anymore.

For industries and jobs Albertan’s have a very high employment rate and in Quebecois they have a very low employment rate. In Alberta we mostly speak English but in Quebecois they speak mostly French. In Alberta we travel in cars but in Quebecois they can only walk around. In Alberta we have very new technology but in Quebecois they have very dated technology. The main sport Albertan’s watch is Hockey and Quebecois people also watch hockey. They mostly have the same leisure activities as us but they like to go fishing to but in Alberta we don’t really ever fish.

I think that the French and English cultures are very different. They each show what each person carries in their culture.

Verbal-Visual Essay

A Place Not Home

Eva Wiseman

Made By Jessica Carey

Theme:  Home is nowhere unless you build it. In life we are always home if we make our surroundings into a new home.

Quotes: (Mine are in bold)

“I didn’t want to be responsible for Tibor or his grandfather getting a visit in the middle of the night from the Avo.”(Page 18)  Responsibility- Nelly liked responsibility but sometimes it’s hard to handle (Accountable, Authority).

“The Nazis had killed the Jews during the Second World War that’s why I had no family.” Afraid- Nelly is afraid that the same thing will happen to her (Holocaust, Assimilation).

“To a very fine daughter may all tour dreams come true.” (Page 23) Dream- Nelly liked to dream big about her life (Desire, Yearn).

“I swear I will never take it off.” (Page 25) Promise- Nelly makes a huge promise to her family about not taking off her grandmother’s ring (Undertake, Vow).

“Good riddance, I say he is a two faced traitor” (Page 65) Worry- Nelly is worried that they might be found out (Torment, Distraught).

“ The same face was always staring back at me, the same hair, same eyes and same fat nose.” (Page 107)” Familiar- Everything is the same to Nelly (Typical, Recognizable).

“Canada where is Canada exactly?” (Page 108) Lost- Nelly is lost because she doesn’t know where Canada is (Astray, Lacking).

“We want to begin our new life in Canada.” (Page 114) New- New beginnings (Fresh, Recent).

“This is like a doll house how can we all fit in here?” (Page 115) Annoyed- Nelly is starting to get annoyed with always having somewhere uncomfortable to live ( Bothered, Irked).

“Elvis, who is Elvis?” (Page 143) Confused- Nelly is confused about who this Canadian is ( Bewildered, Flustered).

Within “A Place Not Home” Nelly has to face a huge problem in her life because she has to leave her friends and home to be safe. Nelly finds herself lost while she is traveling around the world living in many places that were unreasonable for a human. Nelly must find herself once again so that she can rebuild her home and life in the world and so she isn’t so depressed.

Quote 1: “I didn’t want to be responsible for Tibor or his Grandfather getting a visit in the middle of the night from the AVO” (Page 18) I placed this quote with a picture of a young man and an older man to represent Tibor and his Grandfather. Also the word Responsibility was within this page because she is learning responsibility and gaining trust from her friends by keeping their secrets safe.

My Statement 1: Responsibility is like trust you have to earn it. Nell liked responsibility but sometimes it’s hard to handle.

Quote 2: “The Nazis killed the Jews during the Second World War that’s why I had no family.” (Page 20) I placed this quote with a picture of her family I did this because a picture of them is the only thing left that her family has. Also the word Afraid is on this page because Nelly is frightened for the rest of her family and herself.

My Statement 2: Don’t be afraid that the same is to you as to the others. Nothing ever is the same for everyone so you have to be reasonable and think positive.

Quote 3: “To a very fine daughter may all your dreams come true” (Page 23) I placed this quote with a picture of Nelly looking in the mirror because right now all she wants is to be happy and live a normal life. The word Dream is on this page because she is dreaming that she will be safe in Hungary and nothing will happen to her or her friends.

My Statement 3: Dream big or go home. This means that in life dreaming big helps you get through and it helps you to succeed in life.

Quote 4: “I swear I will never take it off.” (Page 25) I put a picture of what I thought that the grandmother’s ring would look like I thought that this was another important point in the book because she was giving her word to her family. Also the word Promise is on this page because she is taking a vow to her parents that they can trust her and she is a responsible person.

My Statement 4: To prove your trustworthy be trustworthy. This means if you make a promise keep it or else you will never be trusted again.

Quote 5: “Good riddance I say he is a two faced traitor.” (Page 65) For this quote I put a picture of a younger man that looked depressed I did this to represent when the older man told him he couldn’t come along. I think the picture is meaningful because I to would be upset if I was trying to help and was told that I wasn’t allowed. Another thing I put on this page is the word Worry I put the word worry because Nelly was worried that they could be found out by the AVO or the Nazis.

My Statement 5: Nelly is worried here because she doesn’t want her family or anyone else to get found out before the cross the border.

Quote 6: “The same face was always staring back at me, the same hair, same eyes and same fat nose.” On this page I put a picture of her looking in a bakery window and seeing her reflection that is different then it use to be. I put this in because I believe that just because she is the same and she thinks she is ugly doesn’t mean that everyone else thinks she is. She needs to think more positive about herself and remember that everyone is different and she is beautiful in her own way. Another thing on this page is the word Familiar because she is seeing the same thing that she always sees when she looks in the mirror.

My Statement 6: “To the world you may be just one person but to one person you might be the world.” I thought that this is a amazing quote for this book because after Nelly gets to Canada some of the kids don’t like her just because she is Jewish but then to her parents she is there world or there foundation. Nelly’s parents moved to give Nelly a better life and I think she needs to remember it.

Quote 7: “Canada, where is Canada exactly?” On this page I put a map of the world to show it is a big place and there can be some places that aren’t as welcoming but if you keep looking and trying to get rid out the bad the good will come to your aid.  Also I put the word Lost I felt that this word had a lot to do with Nelly right now because she feels lost in the world she doesn’t know where life is going to take her and she doesn’t really know how to get through it.

My Statement 7: “Nelly is feeling lost because she doesn’t know where she is going or where Canada is.

Quote 8: “We want to begin our new life in Canada.” (Page 114) On this page I put a picture of a small village in Canada to represent where they would be moving to. Also another thing I included is the word New to represent their new beginnings and new adventures.

My Statement 8: Together is better. I believe that this is a great quote because I believe that if you stick with your family and friends you can always make your life the best it can be.

Quote 9: “This is like a doll house how can we all fit in here?” (Page 115)  I included in this page a picture of a doll house to show that she is being a little over exaggerated exuberant when she says the room is a s small as a doll house. The doll house also shows how small a doll house is so it is impossible to fit a human in one. A word I put on the page is Annoyed because Nelly is tired of the cramped spaces and uncomfortable places to live.

My Statement 9: Nelly is starting to get bothered and irked because of having such unreasonable spaces to live.

Quote 10:  “Elvis, who is Elvis?” I put a picture of Elvis because Nelly is very confused who Elvis is and not sure what to think of him also at the part she has never heard of a pop singer. I put the word Confused because Elvis is confused about who he is.

My Statement 10: Nelly is very bewildered and frustrated because she doesn’t understand who he is or what to think of him.

Zach’s Lie

Briefly this characters problems are that Jack’s dad got caught selling drugs after he lost his job. “Make one sound and you’ll die” (Page 10). After Jack’s dad got caught Jack and his family were paid a visit by the people his father worked with and then the police came. After these events the family must be put into the witness protection program to stay safe.

This book has this title because after Jack and his family go into the witness protection program there whole life is a lie. Their names, hair color and eye color.  “ You’ll die it like the rest of us women do it all the time.” (Page 47) Jack then moves to a new town where he must learn to start over with his life and learn to live a lie.

A central idea running through this book is that Zach’s life is a lie and he can’t get away from it because it would put his family in danger. “ I use to live in Portland, where did you live” (Page 78).  The author gave the character a complication here because the character had to explain where he had previously lived without actually living there.
