Sidney Crosby Commercial

Filed under: Uncategorized — kailat9498 at 4:42 pm on Thursday, June 7, 2012

The product in this commercial is Gatorade. I really like this ad because to me it is very convincing that the Gatorade is useful. If Sidney Crosby, a hockey professional is using it, then it must be good. The target audience is athletes. Most people would think that if Sidney’s drinking it, then they should too, so it improves their ability athletically. In this commercial they don’t have a lot of varieties in gender, age, race, or democratic groups. There is only one set person.

Color, mood and tone:  They used a red Gatorade in the commercial because red is a color of action, aggression, passion, excitement. Red is also used in restaurants because it is a color that makes you thirsty and hungry. It also always attracts attention. The video is in black and white for most of the time, the only thing that is in color is the Gatorade which is a very bright idea in my opinion. All eyes are on the Gatorade.

The “image of life” created in this ad is to convince people that Gatorade is the thing to be drinking while playing sports. If you drink Gatorade you will perform that much better than drinking something else.

I think this commercial is very likely to influence consumers to buy this product. Just by putting Sidney Crosby in the commercial made it 100 percent better. Most people are brainwashed to think that if a celebrity is using the product, then they have to as well.

I believe that society is controlled by what media shows us, but it also shapes societies actions and acceptance of ideas. The more a society shows interests in products, or buys products the more media is going to produce advertisements on similar, if not better products. The media always wants to impress the society somehow. Sometimes on commercials, you can tell if they are trying to tell you which product is better. I think that the media is sometimes conceiving and sneaky.

Testimonial Propaganda because Nicki Minaj is singing her song at a concert while people are drinking pepsi. I also think this could be Plain Folks Appeal Propaganda because many ordinary people are drinking the pop.

Arrogant Garbage Can

Filed under: Uncategorized — kailat9498 at 4:03 pm on Wednesday, May 16, 2012

The arrogant garbage can blocked the doorway with triumph. It acts as though it is too good for everyone when there is no more room for trash. The recycling bin has grown to be very tired of the garbage cans pushy ways. The garbage can always seems depressed with its gloomy, grey color. When the room starts to fill with a putrid scent, it indicates the garbage cans distaste for anymore rubbish.  I’ve seen many garbage cans that behave in this manner, ones that slam down on the tips of your fingers before you have the chance to slide them away. An arrogant garbage can like this one shouldn’t be seen in public.

Invisible Hand

Filed under: Uncategorized — kailat9498 at 6:15 pm on Tuesday, May 8, 2012

A market economy runs in an “Invisible Hand,” because it isn’t the government choosing what the prices products should sell for. Instead it is the value of supply and demand. It all depends on the demand of the product, and how much consumers are willing to pay. It is very tricky because the suppliers always want to make a profit, but they cannot sell items for so much that the value goes down. Often suppliers will make special offers to make consumers want to visit their location even more. For example, if there are two gas stations to choose from, you will probably go to the one that is most convenient with a bathroom, and food to eat. Consumers also tend to visit the gas stations that have the cheapest prices. Suppliers will also advertize their product, or add special features to increase the demand. Suppliers have to make sure they don’t go bankrupt by selling their product for less than the cost they pay. This can lead to a monopoly because eventually a gas station will sell out of business and the other one will take over.

Prices may be cheaper, but sometimes consumers will pay the extra money to have a better quality product. A market economy is truly based on the completion between products and choices consumers make.

In class we did an activity where Micheal and Natasha competed for consumers at their gas station. They both had relatively the same prices at first, but as time went on they raised their prices. The prices they sold their gas for all depended on the cost of gas at the time. When one of the supplier’s price of gas was cheaper, everyone decided to go there. Eventually the suppliers created more features to engage costumers to come. Micheal made partnerships with costumers by giving us free coffee if we helped him persuade costumers on the side of the road. Natasha had a restaurant, and also offered donuts. Micheal had Tim Horton’s at his gas station. It was all about the choices consumers made, and what type of food they preferred. It almost looked like the one of the suppliers would sell out of business but they pulled through by creating incentives to bring the demand up again. The suppliers often had to price fix which through off the consumers because they often wanted the cheapest gas. Micheal ended up making the highest profit and won the activity. This showed us just how important competition and demand is in an economy. I really learnt how easy it is to go out of business. It is also a lot of stress and work to run a business like that because you can quickly go bankrupt by trying to meet the consumer’s needs.

Tecumsah Blog entry: A Letter to Home

Dear friends and family,

1508

Hello friends and family. I haven’t seen you all in five years or so, and I decided it was important to write to you. I just wanted to let you know I am doing fine on the new land. We have come very far and made a lot of accomplishments. I am with four other people all from Europe, who I have become very close with. I consider all of them family by now. Ethan is our hunter. He provides us with our food. Nash is our carpenter; he had the skills to build us our living areas. Cassidy is our farmer and I am the blacksmith. Thank god for everyone having different skills because without them we wouldn’t be doing well. I feel very safe having the mountains on our land, they protect us from any danger. Our land provides us with many natural recourses. We have settled with a house, storage facilities and smithing quarters for me as a blacksmith. We completed all of the living and storage quarters by around 1505. We have created a stone wall to protect us from animals, which took us around a year to build with the help of two labor workers. I have made over 600 arrows, 12 spears, and 1200 nails over 5 years. We often make trades with other lots, for things we cannot get ahold of such as fruit, clothing, blankets, and grass for deer. In return we give others fur, meat and pelts. By now a quarter of our trees have been cut down, so we have to be more considerate on how many we cut down. We are very much settled in now, but still adding useful objects to our camp. Right now we are in the making of building a bridge over the river, so we can easily access the mountains. We are all very tired by the end of the day, but when we work together we can make something very useful.  Each day we take turns cooking the animals Ethan hunted. After a hard day of work it is always nice to have a home cooked meal. I miss you all very much and hope to see you as soon as possible. I wish that you guys could come and see me here; I think you would all be very proud to see how much we have done here.

November 1509

The Queen has come to visit us in demand for soldiers, food, and weapons. I was quite excited by this because I knew my partners and I could provide the queen with very admirable goods, and a soldier with exceptional medicine skills. Since I have two kids who are three, and four I cannot go to war. The first time we asked the queen for an audience, she accepted us and we presented her with many swords, shields, and food such as deer meat. At this point, the Queen wasn’t as impressed as we thought she would be. We had to come up with more. Ethan and Nash offered the Queen our land for the soldiers to stay for protection during war. She was very pleased and made Ethan and Nash the governor generals, as well as a piece of land each. Ethan and I made an agreement that if I guard his second piece of land, we can share the land. I thought this was a great deal because I gained a piece of land by doing something as simple as guarding. While I am on the new piece of land guarding, I haul metal to work on more swords for the Queen. Ethan hired slaves and carpenters to farm and build houses on our land. Each day I ride my horse that Ethan gave me, to make sure the slaves are doing their job and to make sure no one is trespassing.

Dear Mom and Dad,

When I think back to the beginning of my journey, it was one of the hardest times. Riding the ship to the new land was very long. I was very over whelmed with thoughts wondering if in the end I would regret it all. When we all first arrived on the ship, everyone seemed shy, no one really communicated.

Overall I’m very happy at the new land, it’s a great experience. I’ve learnt a lot of things living out in the wilderness. Going from having technology and electricity then to nothing was very different. Living on the new land for so long made me realize having technology such as TV, isn’t really a necessity. I have become very close with the people that came to the new land. It seems as though we are family. I hope that when we are done at the new land, we can still keep in touch. I hope my daughter Lindsay is doing well at home. I miss her a lot and hope that one day she can come live with me at the new land. How is she doing in school? I would love to hear back from you guys soon. Don’t be afraid to mail me some pictures also.

Love you all, Kaila

Immigration and Refugees in Canada

How well do Canada’s immigration laws benefit Canadians, Refugees, and Immigrants?
C –The Canadian government deserves a C because of the little amount of refugees that were accepted into Canada. Under the terms of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, refugees are supposed to have Legal Rights, which state that you are innocent until proven guilty. Canada’s government did not display this towards the refugees in 1914. The boat, “Komagata Maru” came indirectly from Hong Kong. A refugee, Gurdit Singh, challenged the Canadian government’s response when they were refused entry into Canada. After keeping the refugees on board for two months, 24 of the 400 people were allowed to immigrate, others sent back. Some Indo-Canadian families had offered to support these refugees but Canada didn’t allow this. Pg. 173
Under the Charter, any person charged with an offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal. The Hong Kong refugees did not receive this right from the Canadian government. Rather they were treated as guilty until proven innocent.

__
C-The Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that it shall be interpreted in a manner consistent with the preservation and enhancement of the multicultural heritage of Canadians. The Canadian Government deserves a C on the representation on this because of their treatment towards the Chinese immigrants. Between 1885 and 1923, Canada discouraged immigration from China by requiring every Chinese immigrant to pay a fixed fee, known as a head tax. As the numbers of immigrant increases, so did the head tax when it finally accumulated to 500$. This was one of the several laws that restricted immigration from Asia. Today, and from more than a decade, people from Asia have made up the largest group of immigrants to Canada. Pg 173
In 2010 Tamil Refugees arrived in BC from Sri Lanka claiming refugee status. Human smuggling had been reported in Sri Lanka by people against Canada’s humanitarian values, agreements and polices. 492 people were moved from boat to jails until their identities were confirmed.
B- Canada’s government deserves a B because they did well in benefiting safety rights for Canadian citizens. The refugees were treated somewhat poorly when they were immediately sent to jail cells to confirm their identity.

It doesn’t tell me, but I think secretly Sam and Nelly both have crushes on each other. I think that Nelly just won’t admit it because in the past she thought Sam was very annoying. But once she got to know him, she started to like him more and more. When Sam said “So I guess we won’t be able to see each other, “(Pg144) I instantly got the hint that he had a crush on Nelly.
What did I expect to happen? I expected Sam and Nelly’s family to move to the same provinces in Canada. I made a prediction that Nelly and Sam would be able to go to a new school together, which would be a lot easier for them. But when Nelly said “I even found myself grabbing Sam’s hand” (pg70) while they were saying their goodbyes, I knew this wouldn’t happen. I was kind of disappointed because the author really hinted that something like that would happen.
The character Nelly said that she didn’t miss Miki, but I think deep down she really meant to say she did. When Nelly said, “Miki? No, I hardly ever think of him now.”(pg127) I knew she was lying. She was only answering those words because Sam was there. Nelly was trying to hide the fact that she really missed Miki.

Kony 2012

Filed under: Current Events,My interests,Writing — kailat9498 at 5:30 pm on Monday, March 12, 2012  Tagged ,

In class we got to watch a video that was called Kony 2012. The video was about a guy trying to make people aware of Joseph Kony’s cruel actions.  Kony is capturing young kids turning boys into child soldiers and girls into sex slaves. No children should have to suffer through this, it has been happening for too long, to too many children. I consider the guy who made this video about Kony a huge difference maker. Not only is he trying to make a change himself, but he’s trying to involve everyone. If we all contribute somehow, we can help capture Kony and save these children.  Once more and more people are aware of Kony, they will realize how terrible what he’s doing actually is. By such a simple thing like a video on YouTube, the Kony video has spread worldwide with already over two million views. They have also created t shirts, bracelets, and posters for people to purchase online. The more attention we bring to how bad we want Kony captured the better. If we advertise Kony’s posters around the world maybe the U.S military will realize this is something that HAS to be done. No one in the world should have the authority to hurt so many people.

Replacing BLAST blog

Filed under: Current Events — kailat9498 at 7:26 pm on Wednesday, February 29, 2012  Tagged

I wasn’t at the BLAST presentation because I was in Hawaii. While I was in Hawaii we visited a large beach in Maui called “Big Beach.” This because was one of our favorites because of the very high serf which was great for body boarding. One day when we were visiting Big Beach, there was a sudden sound of sirens blasting because of a shark sighting. The lifeguard’s were stating that we had to get out of the water fast. Later on the told us that it was a very large tiger shark that was spotting by a diver out in the ocean. For the entire afternoon we were not allowed to go into the water until they were sure the shark was gone. I learnt that you shouldn’t go far in the ocean especially if the waves are very big because they tend to pull you out deeper. This happened to me while I was on my boogie board.
