2. Mini Wheats

Plain Folks Appeal and Emotional Appeal
The product is cereal. I like the add because it uses humor, music, and pictures to get the add remembered by your brain. The targeted audience for this add would be everyone but specifically children and teenagers. I think it mainly effects those people because of the songs and colors used in the add. The colors are very bright and colorful which makes me think that the add is for younger people, also the song/mood seems very happy and bright.

I believe the “image of life” that add is supposed to create is a cheerful and happy place one. So I think that with that add they try to tell you Mini Wheats are very delicious and will bring color and happiness into your life.

I think this add is very effective on citizens because it uses a theme song that is easily remember at all times. People are more likely to purchase the product if they think about it a lot more and they see it in many places. I saw the Mini Wheats commercials a lot which caused me to ask my mom to buy me some because they did seem good. So I think people are easily convinced and effected by the add.

I believe society and media depend upon another. I think they show us the adds that they think is most likely to cause people to go out and buy the product. Though on the other hand I also think that media is based on things that people like and would need.

Everyday the  stinky black garbage can was just sitting there in its lonely corner, waiting for another obnoxious human to come around and fill up its insides with worthless gross junk. Garbage can eyed everyone nervously even if they just got near him. It was annoyed by constantly having to deal with dirty, stinky stuff thrown into it. Garbage can had made the plan to contaminate anyone near it with its unbearable smell. Now most people avoided it but the smell wasn’t even the worst part; it was always jealous of the beautiful sky blue waste basket across the class room! The lazy garbage can always had to wear a jet black coat no matter the season.

A market economy is an economy that is regulated by its consumers. As we had the example in class, Tasha and Michael were the suppliers. When Michael was the only one, it was a monopoly; he could have his prices’ as high as he’d like because the consumer needed to buy at his station. When Tasha came into the race they created completion for their costumer’s. They kept fixing their price and started to add special offers when they realized that only having the cheapest gas wasn’t enough. At Tasha’s if you got 50 liters you would get a free donut which would be an incentive. As the demand went up the prices increased, as demand got lowered prices decreased. Near the end Michal wasn’t making any profit, so if he would have kept his prices that low he would have went bankrupt. To be able to have an even amount of customers they both could have made a partnership together, saying they would keep the price at a certain amount.

So the “Invisible Hand” is how the supplier is pushed to change his prices with an invisible force, due to demand of costumers and competition with other businesses.

Yore(years ago), tither(there), besought(asked, requested),fullsome (rich), hither(here),nary(none),

When I first got onto the boat to the New Land I was excited but scared at the same times, because I didn’t know what my new home would look like and if I’d ever be able to see you again. The trip was okay but very crowded. On board there were many people sick and aching to get off the boat. Many people were in a bad mood and angry due to the hygiene and poor living conditions. When we first saw shore to the New Land I was surprised, it looked beautiful and full of scary adventures.  I was happy to meet the other people I would share the land with. Thither were two soldiers, one maid like I, and a fullsome man; who brought many things I wasn’t capable of bringing. We made our way to our new land the next morning, it took us six months. Throughout our journey I mostly realized that the land there was hardly developed and thither were nary people. I wondered if we had the knowledge to be able to develop our land to make a good living condition because we had always been told what to do. When we got to our land we discovered that we have a lot of good resources which we can use to build a living. We decided to build our main camp on the soil ground. As time developed we developed the land. We started by chopping down some of our trees to build a “house” or somewhere where we could spend a dry night. As time went by we had accomplished to build a garden, a place to fish in our river, build a fence for our chicken, cows, and horses, and also to start building a house. I most did the easier garden work and taking care of food because the men looked after the constructing and hunting; they also had more skill in that area. As we further explored our land we discovered some wheat and attempted to plant more wheat to be able to produce food. I used the food from our garden to cook healthy meals. Sometimes when the men were lucky on a hunt or had gone fishing we had meat to consume. At one point I had almost gotten an illness due to the water and climate change. It was so much warmer and less moist in the air than back home. So to wrap it up the New Land is a good experience for me. The people I live with I mostly get along with but sometimes we argue. Lucky enough we all don’t hold grudges and are mostly happy with each other. The supply of food is good, and holds us through bad times. Even when times are rough we now have a little back up food. I hope that life will continue as good as it started. I miss you all and wish you could see everything we have accomplished so far! I wonder how you guys are doing and if anything dramatically changed. I hope to hear back from you soon. If I’m allowed to send the next letter I will let you know how the construction and building is going. I love you both very much and miss you a terrible lot.

Today  Queen Mary Colleen granted us another visit; her first one was two yore. She besought soldiers, weapons, and food for the war with the the Chikchikua. They are surrounding us and want to come and conquer our land. We were given a two year period to decide and gather the supplies she had besought for. Our group decided to provide the queen with food and soldiers. We could afford more soldiers due to our wealthy man. I am hoping that the queen was very pleased with us and is going to grant us to keep our land, for atleast another lengthy period of time. Saddly we are not very far from the area that the Chikchikua are going to come from. I just hope that they aren’t going to come and destory our homes, that we worked so hard on. Besides the queen visited us and besought for weapons, soldiers, and food nothing of great interest has happened.

Immigration Report Card

C Legal Rights 9
Should the Canadian government continue to look at refugees as if they’re guilty?

If they have suspicion of a threat the Canadian government will detain all refugees until proven innocent.
Canadian government detains immigrants in camps and investigates the situation.
The government would take the time to look at each refugee individual to judge wether they are a threat or not.
Examples: Those who immigrated from Sri Lanka were taken from the boat and into jails until the Canadian Government can confirm there identity and prove them innocent.

B Equality rights 15
Should the Canadian government charge an equal amount of money for every country immigrants come from?

They only made Chinese pay head tax because there was such a high number of immigrants. While the French didn’t have to pay to enter Canada and also received land.
They chose which race they would prefer to have immigrate to Canada and give those immigrants special benefits.
Now every individual immigrating to Canada will be treated the same regardless of their race or religion.
Examples: If you come from France you don’t need to pay for a flight or land, but if your Chinese you must pay for your own flight and land in Canada.
The English and French have equal rights due to them being the first immigrants to settle in Canada.
When the Komagata Maru came the government instantly judged their identity and origin and refused them immigration.
B Reuniting families
Should Canada’s government allow it to make it easier for immigrants to come to Canada if they have family?
Immigrants with family who already have family in Canada were granted permission to come since they already have someone to support them.
Refugees who came to Canada could be supported if enough Canadian citizens would sponsor them.
Canadian Government would rather have the immigrant contribute to society in some way and still be supported by there own family.
Examples: Chinese men had to pay a head tax and only men could immigrate, leaving the woman and children behind.
When the Japanese war happened Canadian government separated families. They separated men and grandparents from the woman and children by sending them to different camps.
Canadian government makes immigrating easier if you have relatives here to support and help you.

I didn’t know much about Kony until we watched the video in class. I believe it is terrible what Kony does and he should be stopped. The way the children sleep there –in fear- no child should sleep like that. I find it bad that Kony has been acting so long and no one knows about it. I hope he will be stopped this year so the people there can reunite, and live without fear of him. I also thought it was really bad that he makes all the children do those horrible things, like carry a gun and hurt people. It’s good to know there is people out there that want to stop  Kony and his crimes and do so much to try to stop him. When I watched the video I always wondered “What could happen to a human to be like that and want to hurt innocent people, pull families apart, and enjoy to watch people die.” Over I find it terrible what he does but good of all the people who do so much to stop him.

Hiding from reality isn’t a solution, it’s a temporary cure. People may think it helps to hide from it, but in the end when you face it again it will hurt even more.

In the book “the Game” by Teresa Toten it talks about a teenage girl who is being emotionally and physically abused. First off she lives with her mother, little sister Kelly and her abusive controlling dad. Her dad has been abusing her for a long time. I think the best part of the book, that describes that, is page 37,

Daddy marches her to the toilet. She pees again. Too many cherry snocones. Daddy stands there- right there- exactly there, watching. She sees that little muscle in Daddy’s jaw go wild as he clenches and unclenches his teeth. “Dani?” She reaches, but before she touches the handle, Daddy grabs the back of her head. Yanks her hair hard. “Ow! Daddy, ow!” Shoves her head into the toilet bowl. “Ow, Daddy!” She swallows. Her mouth is open. Drowning. Daddy, no! Da- Her mouth is open. Coughing, choking. Her mouth… Then he flushes”

To me that part was very descriptive and gave me a good understand on what’s going on between her and her dad. Every time she makes a mistake; she gets punished.

Dani and Kelly were very close siblings. They shared a bed and helped each other. Mostly though, Dani helped Kelly not to get punished as well. Subconsciously Dani always protected Kelly from their dad. When Dani first wakes up in the Riverwood Clinic one of her first thoughts was Kelly. Page 8 “Fear rolled over her and shoved her into the door.

 “The Riverwood! Kelly, sh-h-h-h… hang on, sh-h-h-h… I’ll just… be sh-h-h-h I’ll…””

That part very well demonstrates that Dani wants to be there for Kelly to help and protect her. There was also another part of the book when Kelly wets the bed and Dani always hurried to clean it up so their dad wouldn’t see it and hurt her.  She did everything she could to put herself in between Daddy and Kelly.

Throughout the book Dani always talks about a game, her that her little sister played to escape reality. Page 132,

Just us. Get it? We quested for us, for our souls. What better quest is there? It was my game. All mine. I am the strong one. Connect the dots. We both knew it. It was clear to us. Light and dark. We battled the dark. Kelly was the light. Kelly was so good. I am bad. I deserved… I am the dark. He tried to beat it out of me. But I wanted to be good so much for… for everyone. Kelly knew. The quest, it was… to end the bad, the evil in me. And still it goes on and on and on. Don’t you see? Kelly is Saraya. I am Yuras. Yuras must be vanquished. I want to be good, and you’ll let me go when I learn how to be good, right? I want to be good.”

I think that part very well explained “the Game”, and why they did it. That way Dani could get away from all the pressure and the bad things. She was the only one who could control the game. I believe it also made her feel like she had power of something in her life.

As Dani gets to the River wood Clinic she is first very confused and scared. She also had problems remembering events that happened earlier; though one thing she remembers clearly.

“I am not nuts. I know the floor shouldn’t be moving. I don’t want the floor to move. I’ll be good. Make it stop.” She remembered the vodka then. Bad. All that vodka. And pills? How many pills? Very, very bad. “Sorry. Sorry. Hello, somebody! I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Can I go now?” Very, very, very bad.”

Page 7.  She abused alcohol and pills to get away from it all. To keep Kelly save she never told her anything about it. I think that was another escape for Dani and to forget about her dad and mom.

Danielle’s mom always came to visit her at the clinic. Dani didn’t talk much to her mother, she was mostly upset. When her mother tells her one important thing; a lot changes for Dani. Page 74,

Danielle, I’ve left your father. I left him the day you were admitted. Do you understand? He won’t hurt you or… or anyone again. I know you don’t, can’t trust me, but do believe this. I will keep him away from you. He can’t come here. He can’t even try to call you, or anything. It’s a lot of legal stuff that you don’t have to know or worry about, but I can promise, Dani. Never, never again.”

Dani got very upset at her mother afterward. Her dad couldn’t hurt her? That’s when the story took a big turn and it made more sense.

The first while when Dani got to the Riverwood Clinic she tried to hide and refuse to accept what had happened. She also tried to protect herself from everything by not talking about her issues. To solve a problem you got face it and stand strong, even if it hurts, it will be better after. At the end there is a surprising turn, Dani’s sister is actually dead. Page 182,

“ Westchester County N.Y., June 11- The Jaws of Life could not save 11-year-old Kelly Webster after a speeding Suburban overran a stop sign and hit Mr. Mark Webster’s late model Mercedes. The accident took place at 10:30 P.M. on the intersection of Valley Rd. and Pondfield Ave.  Mr. Webster and his daughter were returning from the Rockland County Music Festival in which Miss Webster placed fourth.”

It surprised me a lot to read it. But it made the whole book make so much more sense. A few years before Dani also performed in a piano recital-the same as Kelly’s.. Dani couldn’t stand to go to Kelly’s recital and hear her father be proud of Kelly. That was the moment she was selfish. She wanted to be better than Kelly, have her dad be proud of her. No one else. That was also the only moment Dani did not protect Kelly, and she died.

At that part of Dani’s life she snapped. She failed to protect her. It was her fault. She blamed herself. She started to cope by use drugs and alcohol and ended up in the institution. Throughout her whole stay at the institution she made herself believe Kelly was alive. She wrote her letters, and always wanted to see or call her little long-dead sister. When her mom told her she left her father; Dani was so upset because she realized it took her mom the death of a daughter and the other one to go to a clinic to leave her husband. At the end as it turns out Dani wasn’t the only one abused, her mom was too. Mr. Webster taught her how to think what to do and how to act. He manipulated her. He loved her though. That’s why she never did anything to help Danielle. As soon Dani starts to admit to herself that Kelly is gone, and her dad can’t hurt her anymore she starts to talk and recover. It is better to talk about pain then to keep it to yourself and die inside.

Overall every child needs a save place, and people to trust. Everyone may have a down point at some time but they will have to face it to solve it; hiding will not help.

As we watched the movie “La Grande Séduction” we learned about the differences in English (Alberta), and French (Quebec) culture. The two places have some similarities but also lots of differences in culture. They both are in Canada but they still have so many things that are different. In each place you will realize a difference on how they live, what they do, and how they act.
The Quebec town we learned about is Sainte Marie La Mauderne. In that town they used to have fishing as an industry. Now they have nothing. So imagine going to pick up your pay-check but instead you pick up your welfare check, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Thus the people in Sainte Marie La Mauderne aren’t too happy with their lives. In the little under populated town that is located on an island; everybody knows each other. They have no jobs and need a doctor to so they are able to get a factory, for jobs. Do to them living on an island ad the town the only transportation they need is boats to get food from the main land. All together Sainte Marie La Mauderne is a small town that appears to be stuck in the olden days when technology first came out. They appear to be an old town, which looks a little rotten from all the sea water and fishing they once did. Most people in Sainte Marie La Mauderne seem to be of older age. If they want to travel
The second culture is English, Alberta culture. In Alberta there is a lot of space where people can live. We have a pretty high employment rate and a good economy like, oil and Alberta beef. We have big cities and have everything we need is usual a car ride away. Also we have a wide variety of leisure activities, sport teams, and just being able to explore new places. If we want to travel we are able to just go to the nearest airport, or take a care and drive. Thus our traveling quality is pretty high. People here do not know each other because there is a larger population throughout the big province. We have lots of shopping malls, and basic need stores. Most people are able to support themselves, afford new technology and new clothing without well fare. We are also able to just go to a store and buy an X-box, or whatever we would like to have without lots of difficulties.
The Alberta and Quebec culture are very different but also have lots of similarities. They both enjoy sports, like hockey and watching them. Their technology is also different; Alberta’s is more up to date and Sainte Marie La Mauderne is older. I think that is because they do not have the budget to buy lots of things. All of the people in Sainte Marie La Mauderne get a well fare cheque which they live of. Here they are fewer people receiving well fare cheques and more people working picking up their pay cheque. In Alberta we have great leisure and traveling opportunities while there, there is fewer. If you want to travel you would have to take a ferry to the main land and then from there take a bus to the nearest airport. The way people travel is also very different. While in Alberta we mostly use motor vehicles to get to places in Sainte Marie La Mauderne they walk or take the boat. Both of the places have similarities like jokes, cognates, accents, pubs, and sounds. The main problem in Sainte Marie is that they need a doctor to get a factory, but here we have doctors but sometimes still are short on them. Overall there is a lot of differences between the two places but that makes them unique.
In conclusion I would say that Alberta is a better place to live if you want to have a rich, exciting, big city life. If you rather like the quiet, know everyone around you, and small town adventures Sainte Marie La Mauderne is the place for you. I learned a lot about culture and how different two places in the same country can be.

I thought the blast presentation was very interesting and eye opening. It talked about tabacco, the effects and what is in cigarettes. I think it is gross, with over 7000 chemicals that are added to them. Also I found it interesting how companies produce other products to get people to start to smoke, example the gum packs that open like cigarettes, the little chocolate sticks, or the Players adds, or the beef jerky and chew tabacco situation. People should well be aware that smoking is dangerous and it is astonishing how those smokeing adds are everywhere! It makes us have the impression that most teens or people smoke, which is untrue. Only 17% of teens smoke! I also found it good that they told us the consequences and how much money people spend on it. Overall I found the presentation informative and think they good a good job.
