The Game (Inferring)
The Game
(Inferring) By Teresa Toten

Scratch and Dani become friends, I believe, because Scratch wants her to do well in the Mental Care centre. Since Scratch has been to many different mental facilities, and has been at the Riverwood unit for such a long time, she knows exactly how things work. This makes things a lot easier for Dani when she has Scratch as a friend. Although their relationship was rocky at first, Scratch truly becomes one of her best friends (page 98). They understand each other so well because they are or have been going through the same things.
As Dani has more questioning sessions with Dr. Thurber, she begins to open up more with herself than with him. I begin to wonder why she shuts down with Dr. Thurber. When I read from Dani’s perspective, she rarely gives off the ‘mental’ impression. However, if I were Dr. Thurber it would seem to me like Dani has something wrong with her because she rarely speaks during their sessions. Instead, she has flashbacks. (Page 34 & 85)
The author doesn’t say why so far, but I think one of the reasons why Dani is even in the facility in the first place is something to do with the ‘Game’ her and her sister used to play. At one point had they taken the game too far? Maybe drugs were used to create their ‘magical’ world the sisters play in.

Great ideas! You show strong understanding of the ideas. I agree with you that the author intends for Dani to be guided by Scratch. Often in novels a writer will use this technique so the protagonist must make choices. This is how they can reveal the character of the protagonist.
You need to go back and add significant quotes that show your ideas.
