Plain Folks Appeal

Bandwagon effect

b) What is the product?

Diet Coke

Why do you like the ad?

I like the ad because it sets a calm, luxurious mood and gives multiple situations in which you can use the product. It also gives viewers inspiration to ‘Stay Extraordinary’

Who is the target audience?

The target audience could be anyone who wants to drink a ‘lighter’ Coke, or anyone who is full of inspiration and needs a ‘drive’ to begin their projects.

How do they treat different demographic groups?

This ad has a wide variety ethnic groups and features many races throughout the commercial. However, the ages of the people in this ad are all roughly over the age of 25 which might suggest the product is targeted for adults

Representation of tone, mood, and color:

This ad uses a song that builds throughout which sets an uplifting mood. Each scene sets an artistic mood that mixes day and nightlife to give the product a multipurpose effect. The colors are never too overbearing and always match the scene perfectly.

c) The ad creates a very inspirational ’image of life’ around the product by expressing that any ethnicity, gender or lifestyle can benefit from drinking Diet Coke and staying ‘extraordinary’. The ad shows many different people experiencing the refreshing benefits of Diet Coke, in any job, event, or situation. I also get the tone that the ‘image of life’ should be filled with simplicity and joy for your life.

d) In my opinion, this ad is very likely to influence viewers to purchase their products because it uses scenes that almost everyone can relate to in some way. When viewers feel like they can live up to the lifestyle shown in a commercial, they are more likely to consider buying it. Coca Cola did a great job of highlighting all of Diet Coke’s benefits in a simple way to viewers.

e) Does society control what media shows us, or do media shape societies actions and acceptance of ideas?

Society and the media both have a giant role in their own actions. Society used to have more control on what was shown in the media when the media was not teamed with excessive amounts of technology. Now that media can be found almost everywhere, it is harder to control what ideas should be accepted.

To my family home in Britain:

First, I would like to say that I miss all three of you very much. Being without my family is a hard and unfamiliar task. As I boarded the ship to Newland, I wasn’t sure of the difficulties I would be facing. Fortunately, there haven’t been many yet. Yesterday on the ship we were given the names of our fellow lot settlers. In my lot, there is two females with great skill in cooking, sewing, and farming. Our lot has also been blessed with the knowledge of a fisherman. The past view days have been filled with excitement as the four of us were finally able to step foot on our new land. I am expecting great things from our lot, as it has many great resources. We have two separate rivers flowing through, which creates fish for food and clean, plentiful water. We’ve also been blessed with fruit trees, healthy soil, and a space to create a homely cave already in our lot. Many other lots have already discussed making trades with us. Currently, the fisherman and I have been working with a Western lot to trade fruits, vegetables, and knowledge of fishing for a few healthy farm animals. I am quite satisfied with the work that his been done with this land and am filled with joy to see what the future will bring. During the long sail here, there were thankfully no questions about my identity in particular or my criminal record.

I am hoping that all is going well in Britain without me there to cater some of your needs. I hope you, my son Joshua, have been responsible at school and at home as your sister and mother rely on your physical strength. I am hoping in the near future, you will all be here to travel this journey with me.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Morgan.

The arrogant garbage can blocked the doorway with triumph. It acts as though it is too good for everyone when there is no more room for trash. The recycling bin has grown to be very tired of the garbage cans pushy ways. The garbage can always seems depressed with its gloomy, grey color. When the room starts to fill with a putrid scent, it indicates the garbage cans distaste for anymore rubbish. I’ve seen many garbage cans that behave in this manner, ones that slam down on the tips of your fingers before you have the chance to slide them away. An arrogant garbage can like this one shouldn’t be seen in public.

Invisible Hand

If a market economy runs on an “Invisible Hand”, prices are regulated by consumers placing a high demand on products. Producers can increase their prices when there is a high demand for their products. Convenience, price, and availability of products are some factors that consumers take into account when purchasing. When the supply of a product is high, the demand is low, and when the demand is high, supply is low. Also, for example, if a new product is put into stores, the price can be higher with the right kind of advertising and demand. When a monopoly is created, their products can be over-priced without any competition. If competition arises, it is up to the individuals to decide which product company will profit. Some factors that affect a consumer’s decision can be quality, quantity, advertising, and of course price. Some producers will compete with other companies to bring in costumers advertising rare deals and persuade them to bring in their business. Eventually, this could lead to a monopoly as one company may go out business. Today the class was put into a situation where we had to purchase 50 liters of gas a week for transportation for one week. As there was only one gas station in our area, prices were very expensive. This caused Natasha to invest in her own gas station, bringing Michael some competition. Michael and Natasha ‘competed’ for our business at their gas stations. Both of them had considerably good deals but some consumers have different needs. For example, some ‘costumers’ needed diesel for their cars, some benefited from bathrooms and car washes. Some special benefits that were stated were deals like “A free coffee with 50 liters” or “Free donut with any purchase”. Michael’s business was more about quality, free service and gaining loyal customers. Natasha’s business was more based around gaining profit and having a variety of products. Michael’s company partnered with Tim Horton’s and this brought in a wide range of customers. Near the end, Michael dropped his prices majorly to gain a good reputation and loyal customers. This may have caused him a temporary debt, but it was soon paid off when Natasha could no longer compete with her loss of customers. This resulted in a monopoly once again of Michael’s gas station. A situation like this shows how an ‘Invisible Hand’ controls an economy in general. This situation also shows how it is the individuals who decide how a company will run, compete, and prosper.

Newland

1508

My wife and kids of the St. Pierre family;

It’s my fifth year here in the Newland and things are much simpler than I expected. I am thoroughly enjoying my experience here so far, rather than in Britain, where I had much more to worry about. There haven’t been many run-ins with the government and I am almost positive they are oblivious to my criminal record. I hope the King himself hasn’t threatened or come after any of you. If my child, Joshua, is reading this, you will be proud to know I have learnt many new hunting techniques to teach you when I see you next. For you, Aislin, I have learnt many cooking and farming skills from my fellow 3 settlers. And as you are already realizing, I have learnt to read and write. I have high hopes for you all to visit so I can explain to you in detail my new skills. Overall I am doing quite well. Although food is scarce in the entire country of Newland, our lot is doing quite well. I am lucky for my other landowners, as they have brought many seeds to plant, blankets for shelter, and many useful tools for cooking and preserving our belongings. The two of my fellow female settlers have brought many skills of cooking and creating shelter and clothing. The male fisherman has taught me many ways of hunting. I have been feeling as though I haven’t entirely expressed my skills. I am glad I came with my bow and arrow as well as my armor because they have been very useful. However, I am afraid that if I use my skill of stealth and persuasion into stealing from other lots I could end up in serious trouble. As the four of us have travelled around the country, we have made trades with richer lots. For our seeds, skills and garden fruits and vegetables, we have gotten farm animals, meats and other quality supplies. In another five years the four of us will own this land and I am hoping you all will have the ability to stay here with me. Laws in Newland are few from what I’ve heard. However, I am not going to risk trespassing here, for this may be unheard of. In the next few months we plan to travel North and make more trades with richer lots. I believe that all would enjoy it here very much. I am hoping that you are all having prosperity back home and I hope you children, Aislin and Joshua, are participating in school in staying out of trouble. For you, Bethany, I have missed my wife very much and hope that you are taking great care of the children as always. I love you all very much and hope to see you three soon.

November 1509

The Queen of our country made her second visit today with more news about the foreseen war coming to our newly named land, Tecumsah. In order to keep our land for longer, the Queen is requesting we supply her with three main things; weapons, food, and soldiers. Our lot is providing an abundance of food as well as one of our settler’s medicinal knowledge for the soldiers. We are also giving up another settler to become a soldier and fight in honor of the Queen. Although these sacrifices come with another year on our land, in the past years we’ve become some kind of family and losing two members is going to make things very difficult. We have been contemplating joining up with Lot 5 in order to be more prosperous with the land we have and increase our resources. Unfortunately, members of Lot 5 have just become two Governor’s Generals. This may make joining more difficult as they have lots of wealth and power that may not want to be shared. I fear that soon, if my fellow settler and I can no longer provide for ourselves, I will have to venture onto other lots take their resources. I am hoping it does not have to come down to that. As always, I’m still wishing that the near future will give you three the ability to come abroad and finally make this place home. I hope all is doing well back home and I hope to hear back.

Until next time,

Morgan.

How well do Canada’s immigration laws benefit Canadians, Refugees, and Immigrants?

C –The Canadian government deserves a C because of the little amount of refugees that were accepted into Canada. Under the terms of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, refugees are supposed to have Legal Rights, which state that you are innocent until proven guilty. Canada’s government did not display this towards the refugees in 1914. The boat, “Komagata Maru” came indirectly from Hong Kong. A refugee, Gurdit Singh, challenged the Canadian government’s response when they were refused entry into Canada. After keeping the refugees on board for two months, 24 of the 400 people were allowed to immigrate, others sent back. Some Indo-Canadian families had offered to support these refugees but Canada didn’t allow this. Pg. 173
Under the Charter, any person charged with an offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal. The Hong Kong refugees did not receive this right from the Canadian government. Rather they were treated as guilty until proven innocent.

__
C-The Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that it shall be interpreted in a manner consistent with the preservation and enhancement of the multicultural heritage of Canadians. The Canadian Government deserves a C on the representation on this because of their treatment towards the Chinese immigrants. Between 1885 and 1923, Canada discouraged immigration from China by requiring every Chinese immigrant to pay a fixed fee, known as a head tax. As the numbers of immigrant increases, so did the head tax when it finally accumulated to 500$. This was one of the several laws that restricted immigration from Asia. Today, and from more than a decade, people from Asia have made up the largest group of immigrants to Canada. Pg 173

__

In 2010 Tamil Refugees arrived in BC from Sri Lanka claiming refugee status. Human smuggling had been reported in Sri Lanka by people against Canada’s humanitarian values, agreements and polices. 492 people were moved from boat to jails until their identities were confirmed.

B- Canada’s government deserves a B because they did well in benefiting safety rights for Canadian citizens. The refugees were treated somewhat poorly when they were immediately sent to jail cells to confirm their identity.

During the Blast presentation that was put on at our school I learned a lot about the tobacco industry that I hadn’t before. One thing that I learned is how easily people can be persuaded into trying tobacco. To youth, the industry makes tobacco look like a positive thing when in reality it isn’t at all. I learned how advertising can make a big impact on youth by putting they’re ads in places that youth pay attention to, like TV channels and magazines. Another thing I learned was how chew tobacco tins have sneaky ways to make their products seem less harmful. I also learned how younger generations get influenced by older kids and sometimes their parents. Overall it made me more aware of the lengths that the tobacco industry will go to in order to have success. The thing I enjoyed most about the presentation is the tobacco-free candies that are used to influence kids to finally try real tobacco products.
