Thank-you to all who attended the parent information sessions regarding the 1-to-1 technology initiative that we are piloting in the 2012/2013 school year in the grade 4 and 9 learning community classrooms. We appreciated the interest shown and the great conversation we had at these sessions.
As discussed at these sessions, the 1-to-1 technology initiative is to provide access to a laptop for all of our students in every class to be used as a tool to enhance and extend learning when appropriate. The mission of this initiative is:
“Our students will innovate, collaborate, and be highly motivated about their learning.”
We are very excited to see the positive impact this will have on our students’ learning and the amazing learning opportunities this will create as we continue to move forward with our Technology Innovation Plan. In case you were not able to attend, this 1-to-1 Technology Learning Communities presentation was given at these parent information sessions.
This is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative in order to capitalize on already owned devices; thus, avoiding purchasing new devices unnecessarily and allowing students and families flexibility in terms of laptop preference. We have created some basic guidelines and options in order to provide direction and focus to the technology use in the classrooms. Most notably, we are asking that the students’ primary device in the classroom be a laptop with Google Chrome installed. For families who are looking to purchase a laptop and are looking for some direction, the school recommended device is the Google Chromebook for Education. If you are interested in purchasing this device, the school will order it for you and have it shipped to the school. You can order this device by filling out the 1:1 Letter of Intent to Purchase.
As a result of the feedback we have received, and as part of the planning and preparation process, we have created a 1-to-1 Technology Frequently Asked Questions document. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the office.
