June 12, 2019 – Parkland School Division is proud to present another FREE information session for caregivers.
Our upcoming session will help parents and guardians recognize the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ children and youth, and take steps to ensure they feel safe, included and free to be themselves in our communities.
Strong Families Series: Celebrating and Supporting LGBTQ Children and Youth
Date: Tuesday, June 18, 2019
Location: Parkland School Division Centre For Education Board Room (4603 48th Street, Stony Plain)
Presented by David Rust, Mental Health Action Plan Project Lead
An ally is someone who always has your back and takes your side, helping to protect you from harm simply because it’s the right thing to do. By making an effort to support LGBTQ children and youth, allies can play key roles in helping to stop harassment and discrimination against people of all genders and sexualities, thereby creating safe spaces where everyone can feel equal and free to be their authentic selves.
Please join us to learn how you can create safe and caring environments for LGBTQ children and youth in your families, schools and communities.
A light supper will be provided. Limited childcare is available.
Space is limited, so please register early to reserve your spot.

Wednesday, June 26th will be Muir Lake’s 2019 Fun Day! Fun Day celebrations will be from 11:55 am – 2:15 pm. The school will be providing a hotdog lunch. Please still pack your child a snack for the morning.
Students in kindergarten through grade 5 will move independently from station to station. Students in kindergarten through grade 2 will be encouraged to buddy up with a friend to go to stations. All stations will be outside, please come dressed and ready for any weather! Please send hats if it is sunny. We recommend applying sunscreen and bug spray before coming to school. If you send any, it must be lotion and not aerosol.
Students will be rotating around stations that teachers and parents have prepared. Students will have punch cards to show they have gone to stations. When their cards are full, they can turn them in to get a prize. Prize options are a freezie, bag of popcorn or a temporary glitter tattoo, based on how many stations they get to in the afternoon they may get some or all of these prizes.
To make this event a success and fun for all, we need your expertise! If you can volunteer, please complete our Google form (scan QR code or go to https://bit.ly/2HNJv5X) by Friday, June 14th.
Thank you in advance, without parent volunteers these fun school activities would not be possible!

The Try-Me Try-Athlon is a Kids of Steel (KOS) triathlon, which will be held on Friday, June 7 at the Tri-Leisure Centre in Spruce Grove. KOS Triathlons are designed to offer youth the opportunity to experience the sport of triathlon in a positive environment. The distances are much shorter than those in adult triathlons and change as participants mature.
This event is a district-wide celebration of physical literacy and movement in 2019 using these three skills: swimming, bicycling and running. All children ages 5 and up are welcome to register for this event with the support of their classroom or school-based teacher. The Try-Athlon will encourage students to train with their schools and at home in order to learn new physical skills and movements that will allow them to feel more competent and confident in multiple environments. All this for a small registration fee.
When Registering Your Child
Make sure you have:
- Made arrangements with a classroom teacher to partake in the Try-Me Summer Try-Athlon including plans for missed assignments or work.
- Notified the school office of the planned excused absence.

Optional Choose a Race Leg – Students can register as part of a 3-person team. Each team member will complete one discipline of the race – either swimming, bicycling or running. Team members can register for the race for $15 each.
Please note: Even though a student may be signing up to participate in one sport of the Try-Athlon, a registrant who chooses the $15 individual entry must register as a member of a 3-person team.
If you’re in the neighbourhood during the race, please note that the southbound lanes of Jennifer Heil Way will be closed for the duration of the race (starting at 9:30am), and traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction. Muir Lake School has provided our rural neighbourhood with a community focus for over 30 years. Our school building has been continually modernized and expanded to meet the increasing enrolment of the growing Community.
In 2000, the Muir Lake Community School Foundation (MLCSF) was formed and since then have had a great impact on Muir Lake School and the community. The Foundation was originally set up to oversee the construction of our playground and the running track. They continue to oversee the fundraising for the school for the MANY projects that are required and the many opportunities that are available to us as a school.
The Foundation is currently looking for volunteers to be involved and are holding their Annual General Meeting and elections on Thursday May 23rd at 7:00 pm in the library. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
If you or someone that you know is interested in helping out with the Foundation or have any questions please contact Maureena at firstname.lastname@example.org.
