Annual Spell A Thon

Our Muir Lake School Community Foundation is hosting the annual school spell-a-thon to raise funds for sports programming, arts and culture, literacy, numeracy, science and technology.

Each student should have brought home a Spell-A-Thon package which includes the list of words, chosen by their teacher, and a pledge form. Each student will then practice their word list and go out and collect pledges for the spell-a-thon. They may collect money for each word that they spell correctly or may collect a flat amount. For example, a person might pledge 25 cents per correct word spelled or they might choose a flat amount like $10.00.

We encourage students to limit their sponsors to family, friends, neighbors, and those known to their family.

The time-line is as follows:

April 15th        Student Spell-a-thon packages given out – students can begin gathering pledges

April 23 – 26   Spelling tests given – teachers choose date & time to administer the tests to their   classes, mark the tests

April 29           Tests will be handed back to the students to collect money.

May 6              Money and pledge forms due – money will be counted and prizes tabulated.

The final total and all grand prize winners will be announced and prizes will be distributed to students.

We are excited to change to format for the prizes this year. The more money you raise the more prizes you will collect.

Strong Families Series: Parenting Teenagers

Parkland School Division is proud to present another FREE information session for caregivers. Our upcoming session will help parents and guardians guide their teenage children through this often tumultuous time of life, while minimizing family conflict by striking the right balance between teenage autonomy and parent authority.

Strong Families Series: Tips & Tools for Parenting Teenagers

Date: Tuesday, April 16, 2019
Time: 6-7:30pm
Location: Parkland School Division Centre For Education Board Room (4603 48th Street, Stony Plain)

Presented by Joel Pukalo, Registered Psychologist from Family Care Psychology

Parenting teenagers offers both challenges and opportunities. As teenagers seek independence, they are likely to push their boundaries in a variety of ways. While these challenges may create relational conflict, having the right tools to navigate such conflicts can create opportunities to strengthen the bond between teen and parent.

Join us this for this interactive session that provides parents with practical tips and tools to navigate challenges, improve communication and enhance their connection with their teenager.

A light supper will be provided. Limited childcare is available.

Space is limited, so please register early to reserve your spot.

Beaver Dam Dangers

Please be careful of the THIN ICE! Reposting this as a reminder.

The owners of the property behind Muir Lake School have asked us to pass this along to you as a precaution . . .

Below the snow is ice and water, while some of the water is shallow, some of it can be quite deep; especially near the Beaver Dam.  The beavers require the water to be at least 4 feet deep to adequately build a dam and survive under water through the winter, with our mild winter thus far the ice has not yet frozen thick enough for it to be safe to walk on. With this depth of water and thin ice a person could easily be in danger of falling through and drowning. They are requesting that no one walk on any of the flooded areas.  If you would like to observe the beavers, please do so from a safe distance.

Although our students have been advised that they need permission to be on the property after school hours, we find it necessary to remind you of the dangers and ask that everyone be respectful of the Jespersen’s request to insure everyone’s safety. Technically if you are on the property after school hours you are trespassing. Should you wish to obtain permission to be on the property, please contact Derek Jespersen directly at 780-819-0164.

Thank you for your consideration and understanding while we continue to insure the safety of our families.
