MADD Presentation @ MLS

In conjunction with the grade 7 to 9 Health Curriculum, MADD Canada will be at Muir Lake School for an assembly on January 23rd  at 1:30 p.m. MADD Canada’s school assembly programs bring high-energy drug and alcohol impaired driving awareness and risk reduction messaging to the world of education. Please note that the presentation contains graphic and emotionally-driven content and some students may find this overwhelming. To adequately prepare your child(ren), you are encouraged to go to the Website at https://madd.ca/pages/programs/youth-services/information-for-parents or view the YouTube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jd-VVyd5wdw

Should you NOT wish your grade 7 to 9 student to participate in the assembly, an alternate work environment will be provided for him or her during this time. Simply fill in the form linked here and return it to the school prior to Wednesday January 23rd.

If you have any questions, please contact the office at 780-963-3535.

January 15, 2019 – Parkland School Division is proud to present another FREE information session for caregivers. Our upcoming session will help parents better recognize the signs of anger and implement strategies to prevent its escalation, while practicing their skills in defusing potentially explosive situations.

Winter Phys Ed Day

This year the grade 7 to 9 students will be participating in a Winter Physical Education Day. On Thursday January 31st they will be going skating at Rundle Park and tubing at Sunridge Ski Hill, both located in Edmonton. Students will have the opportunity to skate on the two kilometers of skating trails in Rundle Park with their friends and classmates, and have 2 hours of exhilarating tubing at Sunridge Ski Hill. These are motivational activities relating to their fitness and outdoor pursuits in Physical Education. All students are expected to attend this field trip and participate in the day’s activities.

Equipment that students will need to provide includes a pair of skates and a CSA Approved skating helmet. Students will also need to come properly dressed for the weather, with snow pants, winter jacket, winter boots, a toque and gloves.

We will be leaving Muir Lake School at 8:15 a.m. sharp on Thursday, January 31st (after the arrival of all the buses) and will be returning at 2:15 p.m.. A hotdog and hot chocolate will be provided during the skating portion of the day. Students will also want to bring a water bottle and lunch. At the ski hill, they will be able to buy food if students want to bring money for snacks, but this could be pricey.

The cost to the students will be a total of $20. This fee will cover the cost of the transportation, tube park pass, and a hot dog lunch.  Fees will be automatically added to your child’s PowerSchool account and can be paid online by debit/credit card through the PowerSchool Parent Portal at https://powerschool.psd70.ab.ca/public or by cash or cheque in the school office. Please make cheques payable to Parkland School Division #70.

The information sheet and permission form have been sent home with the students but can be downloaded by clicking THIS LINK and sent in to the school. Permission forms are due Friday January 18, 2019.

Please note that even though this is considered a curricular activity we must have enough participation in order to run this day of activities. We reserve the right to cancel this event due to insufficient interest or inclement weather.

Gr 4 – 6 Christmas Concert

Welcome to the Grade 4 to 6 Christmas Concert

The Performance will begin at 7 pm. The doors to the school will open at 6:00 pm and the gym doors will open at 6:30 pm. All grade 4 to 6 students need to be in their homeroom classes between 6:30 and 6:45 to prepare for their performance.

Due to Fire Regulations we are limited on the number of people that can be in the gym for this performance. Each family was allocated their 4 tickets and unless you requested and received extras we ask that you please honour this limitation as you WILL need to have your tickets to get into the gym for the performance, this includes children of all ages. The grade 4 to 6 students that are performing do NOT require tickets as they will not be in the gym except for when they are performing.

We also remind you that parking space is limited, so if you are able to, please carpool.

Thank you for your cooperation and we wish you and your family a Very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Joyous New Year!

The Forest Behind Muir Lake School

The owners of the property behind Muir Lake School have asked us to pass this along to you as a precaution . . .

Below the snow is ice and water, while some of the water is shallow, some of it can be quite deep; especially near the Beaver Dam.  The beavers require the water to be at least 4 feet deep to adequately build a dam and survive under water through the winter, with our mild winter thus far the ice has not yet frozen thick enough for it to be safe to walk on. With this depth of water and thin ice a person could easily be in danger of falling through and drowning. They are requesting that no one walk on any of the flooded areas.  If you would like to observe the beavers, please do so from a safe distance.

Although our students have been advised that they need permission to be on the property after school hours, we find it necessary to remind you of the dangers and ask that everyone be respectful of the Jespersen’s request to insure everyone’s safety. Technically if you are on the property after school hours you are trespassing. Should you wish to obtain permission to be on the property, please contact Derek Jespersen directly at 780-819-0164.

Thank you for your consideration and understanding while we continue to insure the safety of our families.
