The Night Spies by Kathy Kacer

Jew is a short term for Judaism, is one of many varieties of religions around the globe. It is not a word that people should be disrespectful to or think that they are awful, dangerous group of people, and people should not get picked on because of their religion. My theme for this book is that no matter what you are, you have the right to be treated the same as other.

Quote 1: “We’ve packed you bundles of hey to build your hiding place. You won’t be able to stand up in there but you, but there is space to stretch out and sleep” said Mr.Kos (page 36).

Quote 2: “… my dear Judith, I won’t be able to write to you again. This will probably be the last time. So many others have been sent on vacation, my mother, father and brother, along with the others. We’ll probably be joining them…” (page62)

Quote 3: “Don’t you see, Gabi? Magda’s mother, father and brother are all dead! They died several years ago. Magda is telling me she is being sent away to die as well! That’s what this letter is about. It is a warning that she and all the other Jews were arrested and sent away by trains will probably be killed.” Mama’s voice broke again and she fell silent (page 62).

Quote 4: “Isn’t it great to be free outside the gate? Stop worrying no one’s going to see” (page 67-68)

Quote 5: “I know, but I must have been mad to do this.  No one- not one of the neighbors- would risk their lives like this. People around here would turn them and feed them and put ourselves in all kind of danger.” (page 83)

Quote 6: “And now, my young soldiers, you need to leave,” said Vladimir, as he stood and glanced up at the sky. (Page 103)

Quote 7: “Yes, Mama. It feels like we`re doing something to help, instead of just sitting around, hiding and waiting. Please say you`ll let us go.” Gabi pleaded with her mother

Quote 8: “We`ll you and your partisan thugs haven`t stopped us have you Now you’re working for Hitler and I`m telling you to work faster!”

Quote 9: “we must do something,” he said, raising his voice. “We will not stand by and let our comrades be killed.”

Quote 10: Finally, Mama pulled away and looked at the children. “I saw everything,” She gasped. “I felt so helpless, watching from the barn. I saw the Nazis approaching and watch them surround you with their guns pointed at your heads. I wanted to run outside and throw myself in front of those guns. Oh my darlings, if anything had happened to you, I don’t know what I would have done.” (page 161-162)

Explanation why I picked those quotes:

“We’ve packed you bundles of hey to build your hiding place. You won’t be able to stand up in there but you, but there is space to stretch out and sleep” said Mr.Kos (page 36). People hind because they are in some sort of problem and don’t want to face it. Not when you are when you hiding for something that you didn’t make. It’s wrong knowing that these guiltless people are hiding from something they didn’t create. People that are innocent do not need/have to go through that kind of punishment; just because of their religion is Jew.

“Don’t you see, Gabi? Magda’s mother, father and brother are all dead! They died several years ago. Magda is telling me she is being sent away to die as well! That’s what this letter is about. It is a warning that she and all the other Jews were arrested and sent away by trains will probably be killed.” Mama’s voice broke again and she fell silent (page 62). I felt horrible when I read that paragraph. They are human beings, and should not get treated like they are not human being because the Nazis are bullying the Jews people base on their type, religion or whatever, even if the Jews didn’t do anything wrong, and they will get killed because worrying that people like them are watching over them; they have the right to feel protected and secured.

“Isn’t it great to be free outside the gate? Stop worrying no one’s going to see” (page 67-68) my thought was why anyone has to worry to go outside of their house gate? I mean they should be able to go outside of their house at all time, no concern of getting caught or killed.

“I know, but I must have been mad to do this.  No one- not one of the neighbors- would risk their lives like this. People around here would turn them and feed them and put ourselves in all kind of danger.” (Page 83) I understand that other didn’t want to get their lives on the line to save Jews because they don’t want to get killed. I thought that the Kos family was very big-hearted to put their lives in danger and help Gabi, Her mother and her little cousin.

“And now, my young soldiers, you need to leave,” said Vladimir, as he stood and glanced up at the sky. (Page 103) That quote made me thinks that Gabi and Max are very brave by helping the partisan to gather the information about the Nazis soldiers, so that the partisan could come up with the plan to attack the Nazis.

“Yes, Mama. It feels like we`re doing something to help, instead of just sitting around, hiding and waiting. Please say you`ll let us go.” Gabi pleaded with her mother… I thought to myself what’s on Gabi’s mind when she begged her mother to go out and help other… she’s putting her lives in danger! But on the other hand she wanted the war to end. “We`ll you and your partisan thugs haven`t stopped us have you Now you’re working for Hitler and I`m telling you to work faster!” to me the Nazis are selfish and mean because they don’t care about anyone but themselves.

“We must do something,” he said, raising his voice. “We will not stand by and let our comrades be killed.” In that one short quote I can picture team work, big-hearted, had enough with the war. Finally, Mama pulled away and looked at the children. “I saw everything,” She gasped. “I felt so helpless, watching from the barn. I saw the Nazis approaching and watch them surround you with their guns pointed at your heads. I wanted to run outside and throw myself in front of those guns. Oh my darlings, if anything had happened to you, I don’t know what I would have done.” (Page 161-162) That is probably one of my favorite quotes because it has both of drama and action in one quote. It has that love feeling that mother is worrying about her children and what would she do without them…

  1. I enjoyed your Prezi, New! I’m always impressed when you share your visualizations of things. Your are very creative and have wonderful thoughts. It is cool that you are gaining confidence in expressing them. I thought the picture of the dog was cute. At first I didn’t get the connection, but now I just might think of you that way when you are pondering new ideas.
