M&M: Ad Assignment

~M&M candies

~I like the creativity of the commercial, and there way of convincing there audience

~people who like M&M candies, or chocolate products

~throughout the commercial they don’t offend

~they used calm colors’ to represent how the M&M’s would taste, and how soothed you would feel if you ate them.

This ad wants to convince you that you would feel “sexy” and “mellow” if you ate this chocolate product, or convince you to think that you would look “sexier” if you ate this product. It wants for you to believe you will create a good image of yourself.

This M&M ad is likely to convince, or influence consumers in an OK way. They want to ensure that you understand the meaning, and how benefited you would be if you ate this certain milk chocolate product. They made the ad like this in my thinking because they want to make you believe things that aren’t true, but want you to make that certain choice for their benefit. So, it would influence people to believe that they will be “sexy” if you ate this product that is the idea that crossed my mind while watching this commercial.

I believe that media does shape societies actions and acceptance of ideas because the media influence, and convince people to buy certain things. For example, if there is a Sean White commercial on snowboarding, and they want you to buy this specific snowboard Sean White has because he is famous, it makes you want to buy it.

Vivid Description

This revolting brawl crushed the crinkled up leaves, forcing them to flee into the air. This brawl was so intense; it made me feel as if every punch pushed in my cheek bones. “BOOM BANG CRASH BANG!” The clamor and cadence of the stunning impact left both opponents intoxicated with adrenaline. This assault twisted my insides. I wanted to flee in and obstruct this perilous dispute. All I could hear were skulls being crushed humbling the combatants, the dehydrated ground being devoured by their hooves being dug into the ground so intensely. I couldn’t stand to sit there and witness this. I wanted to scamper away as tenacious as I could. I started to gallop through the entire crowded tree forest, I ran, and ran. I could not resist seeing the pain in this head boggling dispute. It made me feel distempered. As much as I wanted to help the succor, I did not have the guts to do so.

“The Invisible Hand”

Competition regulates a market economy like an invisible hand. When there is only one supplier the demand is high. Depending on your choices, and quality of you items, you could be making a god profit from your consumers. Another way to build strength in your business is  to have partnerships. If you have some special offers included you could also get double the amount of customers. Some people may think the price or cost you have out is too high, if that’s the case then you may want to think about price fixing. Using incentives is a great way to bring in your customers. If competition does get too intense, the government will consider to put a monopoly into place between you and the business you have competition with so that it stops.

New Land #1

Month 6:

Dear Mom and Dad,

I wanted to write you this letter to let you know how I am doing. I would have to say we are having a little bit of an uncompromising time over considering that we are trying to get everything together and sorted out. I haven’t been the happiest person alive, but I am trying my best to stay happy, and helpful to help support the other people out also. I live with two people, and their names are Strombolopolous, and Shakeeshah Kabob. We are working very hard to sustain the ten miles of land we have. We have finished building our teepee, and it helped us manage to keep our food supply in a place where it will last a decent amount of time. After that, we decided to start building our first house. It took us around 6 months to finish building it, as we worked very hard on it. Soon after, we found out Shakeeshah is pregnant 6 months. A man named Trayle came down to our land, and decided to help us raise our population to a higher number. Now here is the scary part, I am pregnant four months. I am glad I got the chance to tell you now, just to keep you upto date. I don’t know exactly what you’re going to think, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Right now at this moment, we are working on the chicken coop; we are going to use that so we can use the eggs for our food, and nutrition. Anyways I have to head on over, and help put a little bit with the chicken coop, I will try my best to write you in the next 6 months because that is when the Queens assistants come and pick up our letters. Love you both.

Month 18:

I have great news! Well, first of all sorry I am late writing you back. We have been busy trying to get our land together. It is a little bit of a struggle, but we are managing. We have finally finished our chicken coop, and we are working our way up to replanting trees so we don’t runout of any forest for the wildlife to live. In the end, that will benefit us because we are going to end up hunting them for food for us to survive. We have also made a bear trap, so that we can use them for fur

Report Card on Canadian Immigration

Should immigrants be given the rights of Canadians although they are not citizens yet?

B-: okay; could be better

Some objectives of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act are to save lives and offer protection, fulfill and affirm Canada’s International commitments, grant fair consideration to people who claim to be persecuted, offer refuge to people facing persecution because of race, religion, political opinion, or membership in a social group. Page 177

“During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Canada offered to shelter Refugees in response to specific world crises.”

“In 1976, Canada made Refugees one of its immigration categories. The change meant that Canada accepted Refugees steadily, instead of crisis by crisis.”

Explanation:
We gave the Canadian Government a B- because they could’ve done better. In the Charter of Rights and Freedoms it states thy offer refuge to people facing persecution because of race, religion, political opinion, or membership in a social group. In this situation they were struggling from political opinion, and the Canadian Government should have let them into Canada without question. It states in the Charter they should be accepted because these groups have been disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disabilities.

Safety:  Was the safety of the Immigrants protected to its fullest potential?

B+: okay; could be better

“Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.”

Explanation:  We gave the Canadian Government a B+ because they took in immigrants where some countries didn’t. They gave them a chance to make a life in a better environment, but they were left to make that life alone when in a sense the government could have taken part in the development of their future careers, or achievements.

Legal Rights: Did the government reassure Legal Rights to the immigrants?

C: some good some bad

“Everyone has the right not to be arbitrarily detained or imprisoned. Everyone has the right on arrest or detention to be informed promptly of the reasons there for to retain and instruct council without delay and to be informed of that right.”

Explanation:  We gave the Canadian Government a C on this because in the Charter it states you are innocent until proven guilty but the government treated immigrants as though they were guilty until proven innocent. They had them ready to be put in jail as if they were terrorists until they could prove each individual was innocent. This took away from their legal rights that should have been given to them by entering Canada.

Medicine Wheel

Visual Verbal Essay

Eva Wiseman

Be who you really are, not who everyone else wants you to be. Don’t care what others think about you, be proud for who you are. There is only one race, the human race.

Quote 1: “What will we do? What will we do?” Page 160

My statement 1: Take what you have for granted, because one day you may not have it.

I chose this quote because it is a part in the book the represents the “Arrow Cross” people attacking the Jews. That was an important part of this whole book. My statement “Take what you have for granted, because one day you may not have it.” Is important in this book, because they lose a lot of things because of the war that was going on. In the beginning they never realized they would lose most of their stuff like that.

Quote 2: “Jewish Trash.” she said sneering, “Don’t bother me!” Page 25

My statement 2: Believe in who you are, not who people want you to be.

I chose this quote because it is a part in the book where Marta got upset about having people saying rude things to her. Then she realized that isn’t important. People can think what they want without her caring. The reason why I made this statement is because you should believe in who you are, and not care what other people think. Be who you want, and how you like to express yourself.

Quote 3: “I’m going to jump into the ditch! Come with me!” Page 195

My statement 3: Stay Confident.

I found that this quote really popped out at me because this was a major part in the book also. They were getting attacked by the “Arrow Cross”. They had to try and hide. You always should be confident with yourself, and be proud for who you are, because in the end, youmay bring yourself down if you don’t stay confident about things.

Quote 4: “Let’s do something else that is really crazy. I’m so sick of the war. I just want to have some fun.” Page 82

My statement 4: Keeping Dignity.

I have chosen this quote because, it is a part in the book that really surprised me because I expected Marta to be a sweet, innocent little girl. The fact that she changed in a blink of an eye really changed my thoughts about her! Keeping Dignity is something very important because with a lack of dignity, you wouldn’t be you, and wouldn’t be able to express yourself the way you feel.

Quote 5: “Your father will be home soon! You must believe that with all your heart!” Page 119
My statement 5: Live for freedom.

I chose this quote because, they were all worrying about Marta’s father not coming home, and it has been a long time since they have seen him last. I’d feel very upset, as they did, about this situation also. “Live for freedom” because, you need to realize what freedoms you have, and don’t have. Live for the ones you do have, and make the most of it.

Quote 6: “Thank you sir! Thank you! You gave us life!” Page11

This quote represents the part in the book that briefly defines when the Schultz family was given lives that they can proudly live for. There able to live freely and happily with the “Schultz pass”.

Quote 7: “A sign affixed to the shop doors warned: “No Jews or Dogs!”

The sign that was affixed onto the door of the shop was something that upset Marta. She didn’t think that someone could be so harsh, and she felt that people wanted to her to change just because she is a Jew.

I drew a picture of the “Schultz Pass” beside the quote “Thank you sir! Thank you! You gave us life!” because I thought that it would well represent the pass that truly gave the “Schultz” to live happily. I drew that picture, because it had a huge impact on how the “Schultz” family lived after.

I drew a picture of two doors with a sign affixed on it warning “No Jews or Dogs!”, and placed it with the quote because it brings out the part when Jews and dogs were banned from the shop.

I drew a picture of a trash can, with a Jewish star on it and put it beside the quote “Jewish Trash!” she said sneering, “Don’t bother me!” because it well represents what she meant, and how rude words can actually be to a person. Words hurt if they are used in a negative way.

Difference Makers Essay

Jay Cochrane

How does what you’ve done influence the world today?

First of all, when he made his world records, and 200,000 people witnessed one of them, he was sure that it left the crowd in excitement, and very inspired. What he has done also affects the world today, because he doesn’t do what he does just for himself. He does it for people in China that are in need of health, food etc. He does it to raise money for people in need of help as much as he possibly can. He wants to make the world realize how many people are in need of a much healthier lifestyle.

What were your experiences that lead you up to where you are now?

Well, he has had many thrilling, threatening, and miraculous experiences that have lead him up to what he does now.  For example, when he first started out in the circus, they used to visit children in hospitals, in burn units, those sorts of wards. He said it was very upsetting to see the conditions they were in but, he was also very amazed with the children he met. They tried to see the best of things as much as they could, and really worked hard at keeping themselves together. He said he really loved that! There is one thing that happened to him that is absolutely crazy, that also made him want to push himself to keep going in his career. This is what he said, “A poorly constructed tower collapsed during one of my acts, and I tumbled down thirty metres onto a concrete floor. I couldn’t believe I survived this. I shouldn’t even be walking, that whole thing just makes me want to keep moving forward with my career, and help people to realize how beautiful this world really can be.”

What was your main goal, and what part of your goal did you accomplish?

Jay’s goal was to become an aerialist himself. He did end up being an aerialist, and is established as one of the finest aerialists alive. That is a goal that he accomplishes. Also, he loves to help people. He is not only doing what he does for himself, but he does it to help other people. He is trying to help a lot of people in China, to the best ability he can. That is almost impossible to complete because there are so many people that are in China that need help! So, he helps as many people he can, I’d say he feels very accomplished, I would too!

What made you make the goal you’ve made?

This is what he had to say. This was before he was going to do  “Out of the hills, it seemed, a whole school of children appeared and began to sing a Chinese love song. It was very moving, I visited their homes and their facilities, and they had nothing, virtually nothing, especially compared to us. But they were beautiful, and what they were doing was magical. It really made me want to help others, especially disadvantaged children. I dedicated my life to it. It is not a chore, it is an honour. I am trying to raise as many millions of dollars as I can.” He loved to help people, and he is doing it to the best of his ability!

Did you ever find it difficult to influence others during this process?

At times, yes he has found it difficult to influence others during this long process. But, he also feels he did or is doing a very good job at doing it. He has inspired MANY people in such a wonderful way. Jay hopes to make people realize that we can’t keep thinking about only ourselves, think about the people that need help with their lives they are living. The people in need.  Here is something that he said that is so very true, and inspiring. “We need to do more soul searching: turn off the TV, limit all of those superficial and often self gratifying concerns. We need to think about other in a truly humane way. We need to get out and really interact with each other. We need to treat others the way we would like to be treated.”

Ethan Zohn

Ethan was born in 1973 in Lexington, Massachusetts. He graduated from Vassar College in upstate New York, going on to play professional soccer for Highlanders FC (Zimbabwe), Cape Cod Crusaders (Massachusetts, USA) and Hawaii Tsunami (Hawaii, USA). Ethan also played for the 1997 and 2001 U.S. Maccabiah squads.

What was your main goal, and what part of your goal did you accomplish?

Well, first of all. Ethan Zohn was very lucky to be chosen out of 60,000 applicants to be part of “Survivor Africa”. He wanted to win the show, and he did. He had riches, a bit of fame, and opportunities to live the jet-set lifestyle. Turns out, that wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted to affect a good change to the tragedies of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. He couldn’t walk away from Africa; it was a part of his life. It wasn’t so simple for him to be able to walk away from the devastation that has been there. So here is what he said, and decided to do, “I have always played, and loved soccer, and knew that the game was deeply ingrained in African culture. I invested money that I had won, along with my new more public profile, to co-found Grass root Soccer. Our team’s mission is to mobilize the global soccer community to combat the AIDS epidemic in Africa. By utilizing the popularity of the game we provide African youth with the knowledge, skills and support to live HIV free.” He truly believed that you can make a difference, and look what he did!

What made you make the goal you’ve made?

Ethan was fourteen when his father passed. Ever since that has happened, it made him realize that there is so much more to life then what he knew before. He learned to separate the important, from the trivial. Ethan believes that you can make a difference—young or old! He has been playing soccer for a long time and graduated college. After he seen the tragedies that Africans lived through, he decided to invest his own money, and with the help of his team, help them live an HIV free life. His father helped him realize all of the things he has realized, and thank goodness he went on that show and won that made him even stronger belief that you truly can make a huge difference in many different ways.

How does what you’ve done influence the world today?

Ethan has inspired so many people. He tried his best to convince people that making a difference, is such a magical thing to do for other people/things. Ethan wanted to influence the world in a good way. He helped as many Africans as he could to help them live a HIV free life, and I thought that he did a pretty good job at that! That has made people realize, you CAN make a difference to the world if you keep your mind set on it.

Did you ever find it difficult to influence others during this process?

Here is what I think. Ethan just did what he could in hopes that it would inspire, and influence the world the way that he did. He cared so much, and hated to see people in that type of condition that those poor Africans were in. So, technically, what I would say is he went with the flow, and hoped that it would influence people in a good way during this process. It did, and what he hoped to happen, did.

What inspired you to do what you do now?

His father inspired him; his father taught him that to make happiness real for others is the greatest gift. It provides foundation for celebration of life. Ethan honours his father by living each and everyday fully, and joyously, striving for hard to reach goals. Ethan really treasures this legacy. Ethan’s father is what inspired him to do what he does today; he made him believe that you can make a difference, and making other people happy, is just the greatest gift

Deborah Ellis

What inspired you to do what you do now?

In high-school Deborah became very active in peace movement. Ever since then, Deborah started to travel around the world, mostly in dangerous places, becoming more aware of the issues facing women, and children in some countries. This inspired her to do what she does now because she’s written books, and wants to make the world a better place by trying to get people all around the world to understand lots of families, children, and women are in need of lots of help.

Did you ever find it difficult to influence others during this process?

Deborah didn’t find it very hard to influence others in this. She spread the word pretty well on what she thought, and related stories to the real world, I thought. I would assume she didn’t find it too difficult to do so, because she’s written wonderful books, and got so many awards for them. They are all over the world, millions, and millions of people have read her books, and find them inspiring, and very heartfelt.

How does what you’ve done influence the world today?

What Deborah has done influences the world today by spreading the word to people, telling them we can truly make peace in this world if we set our minds to it, and WANT to do it for the better. The way that she has worded everything, and her just putting her heart out and speaking her mind, just convinces people even more. Deborah s also trying to inspire kids, because she wants them to have there self confidence built, and not care what other people think.

What made you make the goal you’ve made?

In my thinking, she made the goal she made because in High School she was active in the Peace Movement, which inspired her to want to make a change. Overall, her whole life she is that type of person that is caring about people, and wanted to spread the word on different types of things. She has been very successful with the books she has written, and the peace she has been trying to make in the world. Especially since she travelled to some pretty dangerous places, most people wouldn’t want to want to do something like that to try and make peace, and change the way people think. She wanted to do this in a positive way by writing books in hopes they take the things she has written about to heart. She clearly did her best, and is very successful at what she does!

Terry Fox

What inspired you to do what you do now/did?

Terry Fox was someone who lost his leg because the start of his cancer. Soon after he started to run across Canada to raise money for Cancer because he doesn’t want to see anyone go through what he went through.

What made you make the goal you’ve made?

The reason why Terry Fox made the goal to run across Canada was to raise money, and awareness for Cancer research. This is because he had Cancer himself in his leg, which lead to getting his leg amputated.

How does what you’ve done influence the world today?

Terry Fox inspired the whole country. It definitely raised awareness and lots of money for Cancer research, which helped a lot.

What was your main goal, and what part of your goal did you accomplish?

Terry’s goal was to run a marathon across the whole country. He did a fairly good job. He ran 143 days, and 5,373 kilometers. That ended up raising $500 million dollars.

Did you ever find it difficult to influence others during this process?

No, because Terry Fox ran across the country as far as he could make it. People seen him, and he was raising money for Cancer research, and awareness as well. Everyone knows about him because he ran across the country with one actual leg, and one amputated. That is absolutely amazing; he wanted to do this because he doesn’t want other people experiencing such trauma.

Barb Tarbox

What inspired you to do what you do now?

Barb found out she was sick with lung cancer from smoking that was irreversible.

Did you ever find it difficult to influence others during this process?

No, because she wanted to educate as many children as she could before she dies, and she did a great job of it. She also made smoke packages have warning pictures on what smoking can do to you.

What was your main goal, and what part of your goal did you accomplish?

Barb wanted to show children what smoking does to a person, so that they wouldn’t make that choice. She accomplished that by going to many different schools, and educating the children. Barb travelled around Canada, to educate the young adults, and children the consequences of smoking.

How does what you’ve done influence the world today?

Now children will remember Barb, and what happened to her. She doesn’t want children to make that choice because they can lose their lives like she did. Barb was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal of Canada.

What made you make the goal you made?

The fact that she was diagnosed with lung, and brain Cancer, she doesn’t want anybody else to go through what she did because it is really devastating. Barb wants people to see that nicotine is so addictive that she couldn’t even quit smoking after she was diagnosed with lung, and brain cancer.

These are the five difference makers I talked about in my essay. They have all made positive changes in the world, and really do understand the way that some people may live, and want to help them. Doing this essay has made me realize many different things. One thing is, you CAN make a difference if you are determined to do it, and want to do it, not just for you, but for them. I am so inspired by what these people have been through to make other people living happy. Just reading about these people, make me want to make a difference. The main idea is, you can make a difference if you are willing to sacrifice things, and wanting to help other people live healthier lifestyles, for them, not for you. In a way, doing this does benefit you. You get many people that are inspired by you, and the way you think. You would also get lots of support.

Thank you for reading my essay, hope you enjoyed!

French Essay

French Culture Essay

There is many different ways you can describe the word culture. There are even many different definitions for this word also. Here are some examples of what culture is. Your beliefs, the clothing you wear, your daily living activities, the type of food you eat, the different kinds of technologies you use, your traditions, the way you transport to places, etc. Today, I am going to be talking about two different cultures, and explain the differences between them. The two cultures I am going to be talking about today are, Quebec- St. Marie Mauderne, and Albertan. These two cultures are pretty much opposite from each other, here is why. They represent things differently from one another.

In St. Marie Mauderne they’re unemployed, and get welfare cheques, which can sometimes lead to being employed, it depends. They use ferries, boats, and/or walk to get to the places they need to. For there different industries they go fishing. There technology is also different from us too. They don’t have cell phones, they us landline phones. This would suck, because you need to stay in contact, with your friends, and family! There food is also a lot different too. They don’t seem to eat a variety of meals, usually its soup. Even at the restaurant it is very small there, and not a lot of people either. In St. Marie Mauderne there are around 100 people, all together. They don’t have shopping malls, Clinics, Cars, Repair shops, anything like that. They don’t have a whole lot of money either, and that is because they don’t have many jobs there, and if they do they don’t usually pay too well. If they want to go shopping, they have to go to the mall, which is hard, because it is in the city, and they need money to go there. Sadly, some people can’t afford it. Quebec in general is fairly big. They have some of the same stuff as we do; it is just in that small town that has a very different culture then us. They dress poorly; they don’t have schools, or many things to do on their leisure time.

Here in Alberta, many of us are employed, and don’t exactly need welfare cheques as bad as they do. The way to transport to places is really different also. We use cars, buses, taxi cabs, and sometimes walk.  For our technology pretty much everyone, other than infants, has cellular devices, cordless landline phones, and we have really good reception. So, it is extremely easy for us to stay in contact with our family, and friends. We have thousands of people here, which is a huge difference than a hundred! We have lots of Clinics, Varieties of electronics, lots of cars; we have a lot of different things here.  We have wealthy jobs here, and lots of things to help us get to that successful job that we want. Our town/city is full of lots of different things to do. For example, we have swimming pools, bowling alleys, many fast food places, and restaurants, we have schooling, we have store to shop at. It all just fits together very well to help us live a good lifestyle.

In my opinion, they may like the way they live which is okay! I just really think that they should work on getting better healthcare, as it is hard for them. This would be good for them to live happy, healthy, balanced, and stable lives, with their families. It also must be hard for them to do physical activities with so little people. I would find the way they live kind of difficult to be honest. Unless, I grew up that way, it would be fairly easy to get used to.

This is my way of explaining the differences between St. Marie (Quebec) and Stony Plain (Alberta). They both live very different lifestyles, and have a variety of different ways that they live.
