Innovation Week Day 2 Complete!

Muir Lake has definitely been busy the last couple of days as over 130 of our students from grade 6-9 have been participating in Innovation week. Our student participants are working on their projects alongside other students who are working on projects of the same category. As I have wandered around and visited the different rooms (Technology & Research, Foods & Culinary, Science & Design, Construction & Mechanics, Art & Design), I am blown away by the students idea, creativity, and innovation. Every room I walk into is a room of engaged and excited students, passionately working on their projects. There are too many great projects to list here but some examples of these projects are hovercraft, protective vest for hunting dogs, bike generator, bullying awareness, social media Chrome app, website design, duct tape hammock, creating products out of recycling, scooter sled, snow bike, half pipe, fashion design, toothbrush invention that includes the toothpaste as part of the toothbrush and many more. Even as I write about this I am struck by the diversity of our students’ passions and talents.

We are really enjoying innovation week.  We believe it is inspiring to us and other students.  It gives us a chance to take time and think, and explore!  We hope we get the chance to do it again, later in the school year.  We have great enthusiasm.  We already have planned what we will innovate next innovation week!!  This is a great learning opportunity and experience! – Kamira & Hannah

Each day, our students are reflecting on their learning. Continue reading

Christmas begins in the heart of a child …

It was another night of blissful Christmas celebration at Muir Lake School.  Listening to the festive sounds of the children singing and the hand bells ringing … brought joy to each one of our hearts.

Mrs. Gottenbos, thank you for the artistic sounds being created with our students.  Thank you for reminding all of us to … appreciate the sounds and traditions of Christmas.

Thank you Mrs. Berke for your beautiful accompaniment at both of our Christmas concerts.

Thank you parents, family members and friends for rejoicing with us …

Have a joyous Christmas everyone …

Let Your Light Shine …

It was such a “beautiful” concert last night at Muir Lake School.  It warmed our hearts to hear the Grades 1 – 3 students proudly singing out the messages of the season – peace … love … joy … hope.

Mrs. Grant, thank you for your creative work with our students.  Thank you for challenging all of us to … “let our light shine” this Christmas season.

Have a peaceful Christmas …

Merry Christmas to Us!

Thank you to Parkland School Division Facilities Department!

Muir Lake School is having a new water system installed beginning December 11th. We are asking for your help by sending a water bottle with your child to school for the next couple of weeks. There will be water coolers available for everyone to use in the interim. We look forward to the new system.

Help for Grade Two

Our grade two classes need about 40 smaller sized baby food jars. If you have any we could have would you please have them sent into the grade 2 classes. We are also needing small plastic toys or Christmas ornaments that will fit inside of the baby food jars. We are hoping to use the jars on the 18th so please send in as soon as possible if you are able to help. Thanks so much from grade two.

Family Group Activity

Early in the year all students were put into special groups called “Family Groups”. These groups are made up of a few students from every grade level from K to 9. They then met to get to know each other, pick a group name and to do some team building activities. On December 13th we will be bringing our groups together for another Leader In Me activity. From 12:30 – 2:00 students will work together to decorate and write Christmas cards and Thank you cards. Older students will be partnered up with our younger ones. Once completed these cards will be delivered to one of three locations; local seniors homes, local fire halls and police stations, and to Canadian troops overseas. This activity is designed to build community, develop leadership skills and to teach students to give back to others. Once the cards have been made we are hoping that groups will have time to enjoy a small treat and watch a Christmas movie together.

Christmas Concerts

Christmas is coming quickly and we are excited to announce that we will once again be able to showcase the musical skills and talent of Muir Lake School students through a kindergarten, grade 1-3, and grade 4-6 concert.  This is a great opportunity for students to refine and build their skills to a heightened level.  There is a sense of pride and accomplishment that accompanies participation in a performance such as this.  As a school, we join the parents and community in celebrating this time of year through music.  We look forward to every child participating in their respective performances.

Please mark the following dates on your calendars and plan to attend along with your child(ren).

  • Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1:00 pm                Dress Rehearsal, Grade 1-3
  • Wednesday, Dec. 11, 7:00 pm                Grade 1-3 concert (ticket required)
  • Thursday, Dec. 12, 1:00 pm                    Dress Rehearsal, Grade 4-6
  • Thursday, Dec. 12, 7:00 pm                    Grade 4-6 Concert (ticket required)
  • Friday, Dec. 20, 1:00 pm                         Kindergarten Christmas Tea

To accommodate the large number of vehicles and attendees, we will continue with the following adjustments to this year’s concerts. First, we have added a dress rehearsal for the grade 1-3 and 4-6 concerts.  This will allow those with time in the afternoon to come and attend the full performance then secondly, those who choose to attend the evening performance will need to have a ticket

Four tickets have been distributed to each family.  If families do not need all four tickets, we ask that you return the extras to the office.  These will then be available to others upon request.  Thank you for your support and planning to accommodate these changes.

A Melodious Celebration of the Christmas Season …

It was FANTASTIC to have our students participate in the Festival of Trees at the Heritage Pavilion in Stony Plain!

The Muir Lake School (MLS) 4-6 Choir and MLS Fiddlers delighted the audience with their performances.  As I sat and enjoyed the festive presentations, I scanned the audience and saw many smiling faces and proud parents.

Thank you for joining us to welcome the beautiful Christmas Season!
