Electronics Round-Up!

We are doing our part for our environment – let’s do a little fundraising at the same time!

With the assistance of Parkland School Division #70 and Alberta Recycling, let’s “Roundup” those old electronics. There will be a bin at Muir Lake School at the end of January 2018. Please check the poster to see what items you can drop off and keep these things out of our landfills.

Thank you for your continued support of Muir Lake School

Kinsmen Christmas Hamper Donations

Muir Lake Cares! And this has become very evident over the years.

Our school will be collecting donations once again and will be sponsoring families through the Kinsmen Club of Stony Plain Christmas Hamper program. For many years The Kinsmen Hamper Program has helped those that are less fortunate in Stony Plain and Parkland County. Last year over 500 families, that’s over 1700 residents, were supplied with food, toys and gift cards for much needed necessities. Each grade level in the school has been assigned a family (see below for details on the families). It is our hope that we will be able to make Christmas a happier time for these families through our community’s generosity. Please click THIS LINK to see a list of suggested items from the Kinsmen Club of Stony Plain. Items donated should NOT be wrapped and should be in to the school before Friday, December 8th.

We thank you for your continued support of our communities.

Strong Families: Anxiety

Parkland School Division is proud to present another FREE information session for caregivers. Our December session will help parents learn how to recognize symptoms of anxiety disorder in their children and
teens. In addition, it will detail the steps parents can take to manage their children’s anxiety, and aid them in finding the resources they may need to improve their children’s mental health.

Strong Families Series: Breaking the Cycle of Anxiety – A Step-By-Step Approach
Date: Tuesday, December 12
Time: 6-7:30pm
Location: Parkland School Division Centre For Education – Board Room (4603 48th Street, Stony Plain)

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health complaints in children and teens today. This session will help parents distinguish between normal anxiety, and anxiety that is no longer helpful or productive. It will aid caregivers in identifying signs that a child or adolescent is experiencing problems with anxiety. Parents will learn step-by-step strategies to assist their child or teen in managing their anxiety and improving their mental health. We will provide parents with helpful resources, and demonstrate tools and techniques designed to reduce anxiety.
Join us for an in-depth discussion of these topics and more.
A light supper will be provided. Limited childcare is available. Please register early to reserve your spot.

Muir Lake Music Update

There’s a lot of exciting things happening in the music department at Muir Lake School!  Here’s an update just so you are aware:

Remembrance Day: the grade 6’s and grade 2’s will be singing at our Remembrance Day Assembly this Thursday, November 9.

Christmas Concerts are as follow:

Kindergarten Christmas Tea: Monday, December 18, 1:30pm

Grade 1-3 Christmas Concert: Tuesday, December 19.  Dress Rehearsal at 1:00pm (all invited), 7:00 pm concert (only for ticket holders)

Grade 4-6 Christmas Concert: Thursday, December 21.  Dress Rehearsal at 1:00pm (all invited), 7:00 pm concert (only for ticket holders)

Tickets will be given out at the beginning of December.  There are four tickets allotted per family.  If families do not need all four, we ask that you return those tickets to the office for others to use.

The cast for this year’s 4-6 Christmas concert have been chosen and we have started to rehearse and to make props and sets for the play.  Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Carley, two student teachers at our school, are taking lead in these preparations.

The Muir Lake 4-6 choir is busy rehearsing their part to add to the evening.  We meet every Tuesday at lunch recess.  After Christmas, we will invite any interested grade 3’s to join our choir.

The grade 6 handbell choir will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 16.  Practices will be on Wednesdays and Fridays up until the Christmas Concert.

We have such wonderful students here at Muir Lake!  Their talent and positivity make my job the best!  I look forward to sharing their accomplishments with you in the upcoming months!

Muir Lake Remembers

Our Remembrance Day Service will be held on Thursday November 9th at 10:15 a.m. Poppies will be distributed to all students on the above date and donations will be accepted at this time.

Every year, we have an assembly with all the students and try to explain to them the meaning of Remembrance Day through poems, filmstrips, readings, music, and song. Also we try to remind them that war takes its toll on both sides and that one side’s sense of pain and loss is no less than another’s.

Many of you have had friends or relatives who served their country in wartime. We would like to remember these people by having your child(ren) pin a poppy on our cross.  At the time that your child(ren) is doing this, we would like to mention the name of the person being remembered along with a little background information. For your convenience you may go online to fill in this Tribute Form or go to http://bit.ly/PoppyTribute with the necessary information OR print this FORM and have your child return it to the school office by Monday, November 6, 2017.

And of course, as always, parents & family are more than welcome to attend our Remembrance Day Service.
